Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 06, 2011 10:42 pm Hi All We're very early in construction on our new home, not even a slab yet so its perhaps premature for me to be sitting up worrying about not damaging the laminate benchtops we picked once we move in We have a diamond gloss jordan stone island bench with waterfall edges (its a small but detailed pattern that I think will hide scratches pretty well), but then polar white silk finish doors and diamond gloss polar white benchtops for benches on the two sides of the cooktop against the wall. We currently live in a rental with white benchtops so I knew what I was in for when I picked it - ie a lifetime of obsessing about scratches and stains! I just adored the colours and couldn't help myself. Today I was at a friend's place and she has purchased two large-ish chopping blocks that cover the bulk of two areas of bench. She has a fairly similar layout and uses one on each side near her sink all of the time, as both a feature in her case I guess, and protection of the laminate. This got me thinking - could I place some (toughened?) glass or thick clear (heat resistant) plastic over the two areas of white laminate for ordinary days when the kitchen is "in use", and then hide them away when entertaining etc same rules would apply as the laminate - use a chopping board on top, no hot pots etc, but would protect from incidental scratches? Has anyone done something crazy like this and have any ideas for materials, or other ideas for keeping the laminate is protected as possible? Thanks in advance Re: Protecting laminate benchtops 2Apr 07, 2011 6:22 pm For the rentals we lived in which always seemed to have the cheapest and nastiest benchtops - I bought a large piece of offcut marble - put some felt furniture stickers on the underside - and kept it permanently by the stove. You can buy nicely cut and polished pieces of marble or granite from kitchen stores. I saw some at Essential Ingredient not long ago.
