Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 02, 2011 9:25 pm We have chosen an Eden Brae home to build.... the only think I am not keen on is where the range hood is in the kitchen and the lone cupboard... I am thinking of doing away with the canopy range hood and go for cupboards right across with extra height in the cupboards so they go to the ceiling.. and have a slim line pull out type range hood... What do you think - how would you get around this - what I call a design fault... Get rid of that cupboard and leave as is. 2. Put more hung cupboards so it doesn't look unbalanced. Re: What would you do with this kitchen design fault 3Apr 02, 2011 9:44 pm Hmmm it does look a little awkward I think I'd be inclined to take out the cupboard and leave the canopy; it looks like you have a pantry behind that wall, so storage may not be an issue? What colour cupboards and splash back you have may also impact on how it looks. If you have a very white kitchen, with a white cupboard there instead of the dark one, It might all blend a little better. Having said that I am a big fan for more storage wherever possible and would probably go for overheads all the way across, just because it is a good use of space! Having a slimline pullout range hood may also help to make the range hood look less uncentered than it does now. Re: What would you do with this kitchen design fault 4Apr 02, 2011 9:52 pm I too am a fan of storage.. there is a pantry behind.. but because this is what you see first.... as for kitchen colours... we have no idea... in fact I am so puzzles its not funny. I am going to have to go and look at display homes to get ideas... I like ceasarstone latte as a top colour but also like the whites... really I have no idea... What would you do with this kitchen design fault 5Apr 03, 2011 7:21 am It takes a little while to get used to a kitchen without overhead cupboards and a canopy rangehood. I know I worried about it for a while but now I love it - I think it looks streamline and clean. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: What would you do with this kitchen design fault 6Apr 03, 2011 8:14 am Hi, As Canopy is a good feature to have, you could keep canopy as is. Build units around existing Canopy. You could have a open display unit on Right hand side of Canopy for Cook books or displaying of items. On Left hand side you could have std overhead units. In regards to Canopy you can leave as is or install a flyover unit to inclose canopy. You could then place splashabck tiles behind Canopy. If you where to remove canopy and have a slide out why not get a intergrated Rangehood unit. It would appear your home is suitable for ducting so this options shouldn't present any problems. You may be able to have a suspended Mirco wave unit in Corner where overhead unit is currently placed or perhaps a appliance unit depends is you want to scarifice bench top space. Re: What would you do with this kitchen design fault 7Apr 03, 2011 9:31 am Hi, I'd go for overhead cupboards in a lighter colour all the way across with a fixed rangehood, rather than canopy. Incorporate some open shelving as per current example to keep it interesting. Re: What would you do with this kitchen design fault 8Apr 03, 2011 10:07 am My preference would be for overhead cupboards across whole length of that back wall with a slim line pull out range hood underneath one of them. This would be easy to change if that was your preference. Perhaps incorporate glazed doors or a wine rack unit up there? However, at first I thought you were going to mention the strange wraparound shelves around the breakfast bar!...another unnecessary surface to clean, kids or cats to climb upon, knees to wreck.... Re: What would you do with this kitchen design fault 12Apr 08, 2011 12:32 am Actually just looked at the show us your kitchen thread, don't do glazed doors up there, the range hood unbalances the space, and having say, thrre glazed + range hood/spice rack + two glazed doors would be very strange Re: What would you do with this kitchen design fault 13Apr 08, 2011 12:59 pm Hi there, I don't have a lone cupboard situation, though this picture might help you with your decisions. I like your idea of having a pull-out rangehood with cupboards the whole way across.. or I was thinking.. My kitchen will be similar to this one, with a cupboard either side of the rangehood.. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Perhaps (not sure how tall you are..) you could have a slim 'cupboard' put in, and install a pull-out spice rack? That's if you'd like to keep the rangehood as a feature.. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Cheers, Jen Built our house, time for decorating! Am trying to get around to updating our blog.... things have been a bit crazy! http://the-story-of-our-house.blogspot.com Re: What would you do with this kitchen design fault 14Apr 08, 2011 2:24 pm I think it would look better without any overhead cupboards - it's only a small space and will look cleaner with it gone. Those wrap around shelves look strange - I can see extra cleaning and banging my ankles on them. Looks strange. Re: What would you do with this kitchen design fault 15Apr 09, 2011 9:01 pm Thanks for the ideas.. definitely not doing those wrap around shelves around the breakfast bar.. waste of space.. knee bangers.. and dust collector... we are thinking now just the bank of cupboards with a hidden rangehood.... just deciding on colours is hard now.. we like a chocolate wood colour for the cupboards.. but thinking a bank across the top would close in a small kitchen... there is a larger scullery behing the kitchen so I am not fussed about storage space we just want this part to look balanced....we are thinking white stone tops with dark bottoms and maybe a red splash back... what do you think??? Re: What would you do with this kitchen design fault 16Apr 10, 2011 9:26 am Check this thread for similar colours to what you mentioned, i think they look prettygood together viewtopic.php?f=31&t=31639&p=691988&hilit=Lisbon#p691988 And, if you search for the "show us your kitchen" thread you'll see great ideas there too. Btw, soonerorlater, I totally love the narrow pullout spice rack, brilliant!
