If pull out bins come in a size that fits under the sink I guess it would be significantly smaller? Or would this not be recommended for whatever reasons? Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 3Mar 26, 2011 9:18 pm I have one of those. One under the bench. The normal size of a bin. I loved it at the start but over time I grew to hate it. So much so that I don't use it anymore. It's just an empty draw. I found it to hard to clean and rubbish always fell behind which was a real pain to get out and then if you put something in there you would go back and the whole cupboard would stink. It makes sense to have it there and I like I said I loved it but just become to much up keep. Or elsewhere but under the bench? Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 5Mar 26, 2011 9:40 pm Have you looked at the available choices? There are umpteen pull out bins that fit under sinks. Check out the range at Bunnings for a start. It is probably not a 'true' pull out bin. You have to open the cupboard doors under the sink and then there is a wire mechanism to pull out the little plastic bins. Unfortunately it isn't going to be very functional. I allowed my cabinet maker to select it and the bins are absolutely tiny. I asked about the size of them and then forgot to follow up and was quite surprised to see how small they were once they were installed. I doubt I will use them as rubbish bins I think I will probably store some cleaning supplies in them. It is possible that they may be tall enough to fit some small items like dishwashing detergent or tablets for the dishwasher but that is about it. On the other side there is a pull out wire rack/ sink tidy....where I will probably just store the same kinds of items. In hindsight I probably should have just had 'sink tidies' installed on both sides of the sink. When I first started drawing up my kitchen ideas I had imagined having a pull out bin like my laundry 'pull outs' but I was concerned about my children stuffing rubbish in them while they were full and ending up with rubbish smeared on the underside of my cabinets. When I described this to my cabinet maker he suggested the spot under the sink and reassured me that he would order some with lids so this wouldn't happen. I think somewhere along the way the lines of communication broke down as the 'pull outs' we have are nothing like I originally imagined. In hindsight I probably should have just had a narrow cupboard door that could be opened with enough space to pop a small plastic bin neatly inside. (not necessarily under the sink because I think that definitely limits the size of the bin) (If you look at my thread- somewhere about pages 8-10 I think there are pictures of the inside of my sink cupboard with my teeny tiny bins) Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 8Mar 26, 2011 10:46 pm I have a double pull out bin that sits under the sink- well, not sure if it is a true pull out bin either , you do have to open cupboard door and then slide out bin to put anything in it. - we use front bin for rubbish and back one for recylables like tins etc. Not sure what size it is but seems perfectly big enough to me - takes standard disposable shopping bags or medium size bin liners. With only 2 of us here, we only empty every 2nd day or so. Sits just to the side of the S bend so can't see why it should be any smaller than bin under any other part of bench- we have room for box for paper recyling on other side. http://i272.photobucket.com/albums/jj187/nurselovescoffee/house%20pics/HPIM1229.jpg Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 9Mar 26, 2011 11:28 pm Helyn- Yours looks quite similar to what we have- It may even be the same. I guess for 2 people it would probably be sufficient...but I have 4 young kids- and I think I'd be constantly emptying it if I used it as a bin. This is more along the lines of what I had originally imagined...Something to go under the bench rather than under the sink space..... (so you can imagine my surprise when we got something a lot smaller- It is my fault- I should have clarified things with my cabinet maker) http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://www.cashscabinets.com.au/Gallery/main.php%3Fg2_view%3Dcore.DownloadItem%26g2_itemId%3D448%26g2_serialNumber%3D3&imgrefurl=http://www.cashscabinets.com.au/Gallery/main.php%3Fg2_itemId%3D448&usg=__02s7VhO00VIzEbpjBg0C-XioFZA=&h=252&w=448&sz=35&hl=en&start=9&zoom=0&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=NwMik3qwy4CloM:&tbnh=71&tbnw=127&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpull%2Bout%2Bbin%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1T4ADBF_enAU347AU333%26tbs%3Disch:1&ei=cOiNTcCMB42kugO9kpm6DQ Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 10Mar 27, 2011 12:45 am I have the one in the picture in our rental and it is okay except it gets a bit unbalance so I only use the front bin and uuse the back bins for storage. In our new kitchen I have a very swanky two bin systen wich also has a spot for cleaning stuff and its own dustpan and brush kit. I really like to seperate our rubbish and recycle so this allows for it. My mum has the smaller version and it is the business. Ours are from the german kitchen company nobilia. On a rubbish note however I think it would be mindful to think of the way the world is going. At some point in Australia we are going to have to do more recycling than we do ... and two wheelie bins like we have currently in Perth is not going to cut the mustard. In Germany one has to recycle everything hence why lots of built in bins are smaller as it is generally only for 'restmuhl' the left over rubbish because the rest is recycled. My bin like the one above does us just fine for each day and we are a fairly busy family of four! That's a very valid point kayandandy- I had actually thought I had considered that in terms of the space I would need......but you're right I'm sure having a smaller bin would probably make me more AWARE of how much 'stuff' we generate as a family- whether it be rubbish or recycling.....so I should probably use my undersink bin as a bin (not a storage space for cleaning supplies) I keep my "rubbish" and "recycling" in the same place in the house (obviously in two separate bins) and there still needs to be a place for the recycling to be stored until I take out to the recycling bin outside. If required I'll probably put some sort of box/ container inthe bottom of the sink (like helyn has) for additional recycling that may not fit in the little bins. Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 12Apr 02, 2011 6:26 am We have ours under the sink and honestly its the worst possible place to put a bin.
Whenever you need to put something in the bin there is always someone at the sink, its a Murphy's Law kinda thing. I'm going to move ours to a cupboard somewhere where its not possible for someone to stand. Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 13Apr 02, 2011 7:15 am We also found it annoying having the bin under the sink for the same reason as tivoenator. In our new kitchen we are having it in the island which will be opposite the sink and where food preparation will be done, theory being we will then just sweep food scraps straight into bin. I've been looking at in-cupboard bins for our new kitchen but perhaps it is more practical to stick with a standalone one. Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 16Apr 02, 2011 10:16 am Helyn Haven't found above to be a problem myself - couldnt somebody be just as easily standing at bench prepareing food when you want to access the bin? Yeah, I agree. It's normally only me at the sink anyway lol. I would've had a seperate bin cupboard if I could, we did in our old house and it was good, but it was next to the sink, I just didn't want to eat into cupboard space in this house so our bin is under our sink. I like it there as it's next to the dishwasher so it's easy to scrape the dishes off and straight into the dishwasher in one movement Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 17Apr 02, 2011 1:04 pm Helyn Haven't found above to be a problem myself - couldnt somebody be just as easily standing at bench prepareing food when you want to access the bin? Exactly...thats why I said "I'm going to move ours to a cupboard somewhere where its not possible for someone to stand." But probably should have used the word "probable" rather than "possible" Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 18Apr 02, 2011 1:04 pm Rizzo, is yours like helyn's? Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 19Apr 02, 2011 2:57 pm Nah, mines just a double bin from bunnings sitting in there at the moment. My friend has one though similar to Helyn's but it seems a bit bigger and has two bins, so it saves not having to take out the rubbish all the time. I think ikea have them, so next time I'm there I am going to get one. Re: Does anyone have a pull out bin UNDER the sink? 20Apr 02, 2011 3:11 pm Just another suggestion for pull-out bins (although it won't work for under sink) is instead of having a cupboard door that you have to open and then pull out a bin, put in an upside down drawer that is the same size as the cupboard door instead. Basically that means that the panel that would normally be the bottom of the drawer will now be at the top, and just the bottom of the "drawer" will be open. Then either you or your builder can cut a hole into the top piece of laminate to fit your bin in. The bonus of this is that rubbish won't slip down the sides because your bin fits perfectly in the space, and the rest of the top is a panel of laminate (or whatever you choose) so the rubbish doesn't slip down.
