Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 25, 2011 4:18 pm Hi, Not sure if this is a stupid question or if anyone can help me. We are building a new house (as owner builders) and we want an island bench with waterfall edges. We're planning on installing timber floor boards over the top of our concrete slab but we were wanting to move in before we put the timber boards down so that we can get all our paving done first etc so the boards don't get damaged. I'm just wondering if it's possible to have an island bench installed with stone bench top and waterfall edges before we put the boards down, or do the boards have to be down first? Thanks Our owner-builder journey - viewtopic.php?f=38&t=45187 Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 2Mar 25, 2011 6:34 pm Our floorboards were installed after the stone bench with waterfall edges. There was no problem with them being done after. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. Do you remember how they did it - did they just put the boards up to the edge of the stone bench then put something over the top of the gap around the ege of the bench, or did they lift the bench up and put the boards under it? Have you got any photos of it? Our owner-builder journey - viewtopic.php?f=38&t=45187 Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 5Mar 26, 2011 1:25 pm That's good to know Rizzo. Do you have an island bench with waterfall edges? Just wondering if the beading looks ok around the edges of the waterfall edges. Our owner-builder journey - viewtopic.php?f=38&t=45187 Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 6Mar 26, 2011 3:48 pm Hi, I've seen the beading or quad around waterfall edges in kitchen s on this forum, but can't recall the members who had it, sorry I think it looks fine, in that quad in general is not a preferred option to have, but if you have to have it it doesn't look any worse than it does around skirting boards etc. Maybe check people who have built with PD, as PD ppl usually have their own floors installed if they are having floorboards, which means that quad usually has to be used as it's installed after handover, hence after kitchen has been put in. Are your waterfall edges white? It might help to paint the quad before it goes on in the same colour as your bench top, might make it blend in a bit better? Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 7Mar 26, 2011 4:18 pm These aren't close up, but you get the idea. I think it looks fine around the waterfall and don't notice it. It's the same wood as the floors, so it all matches in. We have normal skirtings around the walls, but they need to finish it off around the kitchen and external doors, so they used the beading. (we don't have it in front of the dishwasher as this was done later, so the dishwasher is sitting on the boards and the kickboard can come off if we need to move it) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 8Mar 26, 2011 4:27 pm We have solid timber floors and the floors were installed before the kitchen. We have no beading. Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 9Mar 26, 2011 4:30 pm Beautiful floors rizzo! what is the timber? Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 10Mar 26, 2011 4:35 pm donuts Beautiful floors rizzo! what is the timber? I think it's Marri timber ....had a sneak peak at her build thread. hehehe Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 11Mar 26, 2011 5:06 pm Yep Marri Dollar, out of curiosity, what did they do around your doorways? (not internal, just external if you have any where the timber is?) We have big double sliders and if we didn't have the beading, we would have had gaps between them. My sister got them to make a plank to put over hers as she didn't want beading either. Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 12Mar 26, 2011 5:08 pm Our floorboards went in after the kitchen - we don't have waterfall ends, but the process is the same, with timber quad strips installed around all edges. You can either stain the quad to match the floorboards or paint it to match skirtings/cabinetry. If you have a variety of materials - painted skirtings, timber feature doors, stone waterfall edge, laminate cabinets etc - it's probably better to match it to the floorboards. Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 14Mar 26, 2011 7:59 pm Rizzo, that looks amazing! Thanks for the photos, you've completely put my mind at rest. We are most likely going to use Marri floorboards too. I couldn't even notice the beading, it blends in totally with the floorboards. Thanks for everyone's help - thats one less thing for me to think about tonight when I wake up in the middle of the night! Because we had our floor coverings installed after handover and the skirtings had been put in place by then, quad strips were our only viable option. They're unobtrusive - nobody even notices them. I think people who come over don't even notice. We have sliders too in our theatre room so yes we do have a stripping there. Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 19Mar 27, 2011 10:03 pm I think the wood bead/quad looks fine but you might want to check how much it will lower the height of your benches to have the floors added after. I prefer benches that are a bit higher than standard so you dont get a sore back. A cm or two lower than standard would feel too low to me. You would be surprised how much difference it can make. Re: Installation of Island before timber floor down?? 20Apr 27, 2011 11:24 pm Are you installing a floating floor or secret nailed and glued "structural" floor? If you are installing a secret nailed floor (I think over concrete they put down ply first?) then you'll need to install the bench after. The beading is used for floating floor installations (I believe) - correct me if I am wrong.
