Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 16, 2011 9:20 pm If you have one do you like it or do you wish you had a double bowl? We are opting to go a single bowl on our island bench located to the far left to maximise bench space. I'm not sure if I'm going to regret this decision or love it! We will have a dishwasher so I can't imagine there is going to be a great deal of dishes to do and in our previously owned house (which was an older home) we made do with a single. After any thoughts Re: Single bowl sink anyone? 2Mar 16, 2011 9:26 pm I personally think that it is what you are use to... I have had both and can't say I wished I had two when I had one sink or visa versa.... I think if the sink is large enough one would be enough.....especially if you have a dishwasher. Re: Single bowl sink anyone? 3Mar 17, 2011 8:43 am Yep, single bowl for us and entirely adequate - and particularly so with a dishwasher. But do consider the location of your sink on your island bench top. I suggest you have either a flat surface/drainage area either side of your sink. Prevents splashing onto the floor if one side of the sink is close up to the edge of your bench. And you have to put the stuff you are about wash somewhere so adjacent to the sink is the best place. barkly Re: Single bowl sink anyone? 4Mar 17, 2011 8:52 am we have a single bowl now - and I would rather have a double. I still hand wash a lot of things - and I hate it when I am in the middle of washing and I have a cup full of...tea, and I can't pour it into my sink of water... I end up walking to the laundry to pour it out. Also - I hate the fact I can't rinse. I am HANGING out for a double sink in the new house. I also have the terribly old fashioned idea that it is better to have a double drainer - ie drainge on both sides of sink - was not easy to get one and changed original single sided sink to have this - by doing so double sink wouldnt fit but that has not been a problem. I do not have an island bench, my kitchen is u-shape with sink under window on the short end of the U. Not sure if that changes anything to do with the best sink design. Re: Single bowl sink anyone? 6Mar 17, 2011 2:29 pm I don't have a single bowl - haven't since my first home 15yrs ago. BUT even though we have a dishwasher there are still a lot of things that I handwash:- 1. Baby bottles 2. Large electrical appliances like woks / pressure cookers / frying pans etc 3. Plastic containers - tupperware seems to "stain" and sometimes warp in the dishwasher 4. Fragile items like Royal Albert dinnerware. For this reason I would always choose at least one and a half sinks - I like to wash in one then rinse in the second. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Single bowl sink anyone? 8Mar 17, 2011 2:39 pm Double for me - it's also convenient when you only have a couple of things to wash to use the small sink. Re: Single bowl sink anyone? 10Mar 17, 2011 3:40 pm Thanks for your feedback everyone Since our single bowl days, we have moved twice and both rentals have had the double bowl sink. The first of those 2 had a dishwasher and when we first moved in it felt like a waste of water and effort to use them both, however we were occasionally using both at the end of the 2 years we were living there . This one we are in currently does not have a dishwasher ( it's killing us after having lived with one for 9 years) we use both sinks without a second thought and have gotten use to rinsing everything. The dishwasher was the first thought when planning to build, we figure it's going to feel like we have barely any dishes after having to wash for 6 by hand for 2 years!! I guess the double bowl is just the norm at the moment and that may be why I'm doubting our choice. Dishes are an inconvenience whether it be with a single or a double bowl!! Re: Single bowl sink anyone? 11Mar 17, 2011 3:43 pm claireh All very interesting to me. I grew up in Canada with a single sink (its the norm over there) and wasn't until I got to Australia in my 20s that encountered the double sink. I too grew up in Canada Claire and remember us having a single sink in one house, but the last house we lived in had a double sink. But back to topic ...Peas - i am totally with you on the single sink idea on your island (if that's where you will do most of the prepping of your vegies etc when cooking) and you don't encroach on your island space. and as you say, you have ur dishwasher and would probably only be rinsing thing in the sink. I wanted to do a single sink with vegie sprayer on the island and then have a double sink in the galley in our house, but it would've cost too much to change over Cheers, M Building Waldorf 44 with PD Feel free to follow our build progress - http://melnrobsknockdownrebuild.blogspot.com/ Re: Single bowl sink anyone? 12Mar 17, 2011 3:54 pm Totally off topic.... Just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS MelNRob on your demolition today, how exciting Re: Single bowl sink anyone? 13Mar 17, 2011 5:48 pm Personally, I've lived in plenty of rental places with a single sink and have always wanted a double. Even with a dishwasher, there are just so many uses for the extra sink, whether it's to use the drain to tip something out, peeling vegies into it, a place to throw a dirty saucepan until you need it again etc, not to mention rinsing all the items that you can't put in the dishwasher. This annoyed me too with our single bowl sink at our last home. When cooking I like to have one bowl with warm soapy water in it so I can wash up as I go. Having the two sinks means I can still drain vegies or pasta etc. I couldn't go back to a single bowl. There are some things you just cannot put in a dishwasher...good knives, certain pots and pans, wooden utensils. Not having a place to store and rinse these things would drive me mad. Just wanted to say CONGRATULATIONS MelNRob on your demolition today, how exciting oh, feeling the love Thanks Peas, i went around there after work and nearly cried though......memories! But although the house is not gone yet, i could see the prep work - holes punched into eaves (no asbestos (A given), jimmying of our front door open (silly old MelnRob, so in the habit of locking up after themselves locked the door to an empty house! security conscious much..lol). That put me in a good mood for the rest of the night as now we can say that our journey has officially begun...Yay! This is my concern as i tend to wash up by hand and was thinkng we have an undermount too and don't have a drain board...is it easy to source one?
