Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 15, 2011 10:08 pm Hi sorry for the long boring technical question but hoping someone clever can help! We have been using our new kitchen since September last year - but last week after I had finished cooking I noticed that the bottom of the doors above the stove had melted! I had used the wok burner - but there was no fire/flame this happened purely through heat! Some background info: We have an undermount rangehood (600 mm above the highest part of the stove - ie. the trivets). The cabinet doors which are gloss vinyl wrap hang down a further 25mm - we don't have handles on the doors but use the overhang as a pull. So the cabinet doors are 570mm from the stove top. I believe this is out of code? I think it has to be 600 minimum. So my question is whether the 600 minimum is correct and even if it is - surely 25mm won't make that much difference? Even now the cabinet doors are flush with the base of the cabinet (the kitchen guy came out and moved them temporarily) they get extraordinarily hot! Any ideas? thanks very much. Lou Re: Minimum Cabinet height above gas cooktop 3Mar 16, 2011 8:57 am you should look up your cooktop spec also. having been in this situation and having to replace a clients Miele rangehood as it wasnt covered by warranty, i know all about this. As Grinder has said, 700 to the lowest point is a pretty good benchmark. Aus Standards is 650 to the trivets. This is why i hate vinyl wrapped doors for this exact reason. they look great in a showroom and are cheap to make, but are not a match in durability compared with 2pac or melamine. G Re: Minimum Cabinet height above gas cooktop 4Mar 17, 2011 6:42 pm Thanks for the info. Can anyone point me in the direction of the Australian Standards that say 650 minimum? I spoke to someone - from the plumbers board and they said it was 600mm minimum. If it is 650mm I need to be able to show the kitchen guys. At the moment they are being quite helpful and are are willing to replace the doors - but obviously it seems like 600mm will still be too close. There's not much point replacing them just to have it happen again and so it seems like we'll have to move everything up. Then things get tricky because the splash back that currently goes the full height will have a gap and I know they won't be volunteering to correct that! thanks again Lou Ps. I rang the stove/ rangehood company and they say the rangehood must be a minimum of 600mm from the trivets. (obviously they're not interested in the cabinet part of things - their measurement is for warranty on their product) My land is 260m2 (10m x 26m) located in claymore NSW. Under campbelltown council.
