Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: undermount sinks - opinions 22May 18, 2013 9:50 am Reviving this thread. Wondering what current opinions are. We are having to decide on sink this fortnight. Undermount looks great. BUT what are the con's? Draining an issue? Leaving pots and stuff on benchtop next to sink - scratching, chipping, staining ???? Re: undermount sinks - opinions 24May 22, 2013 12:21 am We did our kitchen a few years ago. We switched from an old top mount sink with draining board to an undermount double sink for ease of cleaning & sleek, uncluttered look. Pros & Cons of undermount (to me): easy to wipe water & mess from adjoining bench straight into sink grime does build up in grooved joint b/n sink & bench - same as top mount looks neat & modern we have gotten a couple of little chips in the edge of our granite benchtop at the edge of the sink - probably from hitting it with heavy pots & pans if you put away your dry dishes (& dish rack) you have extra bench & a less cluttered look - but if you're like us there are always dishes in a dish rack on the bench anyway We got a dish drying rack that fits inside one of the sinks - my idea with that was, the drying dishes (we air dry, never towel dry - too busy) would be less obtrusive - half hidden in the sink - but that didn't work out well for us, as we got the double sink so we can empty drinks and dirty water into the other sink while washing up or stacking the dishwasher, and it doesn't really work well to use the second sink for both dirty & clean stuff. We also have a dish rack that has a tray to catch the drips but then you have to empty & rinse it. So I'm not sure what the best draining system is. Probably grooves cut into the bench top, and put a dishrack (without tray) on top of it so you don't chip the granite or whatever. Regardless of the cons, I think I'll still opt for an undermount in my next kitchen.
