Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 23, 2011 8:15 am Hi Guys, I need to be quick on this one as I ordered my kitchen last night, bu now am thinking I may have done the wrong thing So My question is ??? I am having an Island bench - should I go Square edge or Round? My colours are - Pure Mineral Stone Diamond Gloss Back and sides of bench are - Gunship Metalic Gloss Cupboard fronts and draws - White Gloss I really think I would like the Square Edge, gives off the look more of a stone bench top.. If anyone has any pics they could show me I would be much appreciated - but as I said I need to be quick!! My poor Kitchen man Thanks, T Re: Square Edge or Round Laminex Benchtops 2Feb 23, 2011 8:31 am Well, I like round edge - Im not trying to make my laminex look like stone so thats ok, it is what it is. I also dont have an island bench so not sure if that alters the look you are after with the benchtop. Anyway I am a dinosaur -I think you will find the majority of people go for square edge now - not sure why,I guess its just a fashion thing - round edge is out, square edge is in. My house is not modern style anyway, its more a traditional cottage look, so I think round suits it better. I guess you have to think about rest of house and what sort of overall style you are haveing. Square Edge or Round Laminex Benchtops 3Feb 23, 2011 9:01 am Square for me. Rounded might make your house look older than it really is. "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Yes I think your right!! Do you know how thick the bench top should be - I have been doing a bit of investigating and seeing alot of about 33mm thick??? Im sure my Kitchen man will know anyway... Thanks Helyn, I quite like both too - but I am trying to go for the more modern look, so think the square is going to suit better Re: Square Edge or Round Laminex Benchtops 6Feb 23, 2011 10:30 am Laminex squareform tops are 39mm thick. Not sure) you can see the substrate along the corner, so you see a black line along the edge. Hope that makes sense. Go into any house built from the 60's to the 80's and you'll find square edges. Seems round edges came in and went out pretty quick. Square Edge or Round Laminex Benchtops 10Feb 23, 2011 12:54 pm Yes, I think it's because the square edges have more of a classic timeless look about them. The rounded ones were a bit of a 70s/80s fad IMO. But who knows they might come back into vogue one day too "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Re: Square Edge or Round Laminex Benchtops 11Feb 23, 2011 1:31 pm Well I got the plain jane laminate for my countertops, no fancy diamond gloss or squareform or what ever you call it. I went for the round edge, only because I didn't want the black seam to show which I think is more unsightly than the rounded edge. Re: Square Edge or Round Laminex Benchtops 13Feb 23, 2011 1:53 pm I think it depends if you can see the seam in the edge. With diamond gloss edging its not a problem but in standard square edging, it can be quite obvious which I think might cheapen the look. That's where I think having a rolled edge would look better. In the bathrooms I've got a 5mm(I think it was 5) rolled edge for that reason since I wanted to go standard. Re: Square Edge or Round Laminex Benchtops 14Feb 23, 2011 2:06 pm One disadvantage of round edges is that when you spill something the liquid tends to follow the curve and run under the bench and into your cupboards/drawers. As with square edge, it will simply run down the edge and onto the floor. I have experienced both and this is what I have found. Re: Square Edge or Round Laminex Benchtops 15Feb 23, 2011 4:03 pm Squareform have a little groove under the lip that is meant t stop drips going into the cupboard. I love this look. Re: Square Edge or Round Laminex Benchtops 16Feb 23, 2011 6:33 pm The round edge everyone is talking about is a standard post formed edge where the laminate is heated so it can be formed around the semi circular edge of the bench in one continuous piece without breaking. They used to have to follow a fairly large radius to prevent the laminate cracking. Technology moves on and now post forming allows the laminate to be bent around a much tighter radius (4mm) so instead of bending around a large semi-circle you effectively have a square edge with very small radius. Sheet of laminate is continuous right around face to underside. There are no joins on edge, except ends. Re: Square Edge or Round Laminex Benchtops 18Feb 23, 2011 7:04 pm I like the clean lines of a square edge bench top. But it really depends if the kitchen is modern or you have a county look or classical look to your home. Our cabinets are 2 pack gloss in metallic white so sounds pretty close to what you are trying to achieve. You may want to find out if you are having waterfall edges if they are doing mitred joints or butt joints? I have seen some comments on this forum where people's cabinet makers wont do mitred joints for some reason? http://i894.photobucket.com/albums/ac150/benschke/Kitchen-Living/New%20Kitchen/IMG_0639.jpg http://i894.photobucket.com/albums/ac150/benschke/Kitchen-Living/New%20Kitchen/IMG_0614.jpg Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Depends...
