Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 22, 2011 3:50 pm I had my Freed0m kitchen installed in November and I have just noticed surface scratches in a number of places. I am really disappointed with it. I've previously had stone and I wish I had stuck with that choice. The designer sold me on all the benefits of acrylic and that was what won me over. If I had any idea it would scratch so easily I wouldn't have chosen it. My husband and I certainly aren't rough on our kitchen - the scratches have just appeared from regular use. I was sent "care information" from the manufacturer today which basically says that I should treat it like a "fine timber" and Jif will fix the problem! "Fine timber" - hello?? it's a kitchen, not a flipping piece of antique furniture!!! Anyway, just wondering what experience others have had and if Jif does actually miraculously remove surface scratches! Re: Scratched acrylic surface 2Feb 22, 2011 3:53 pm I thought that acrylic surfaces could be buffed smooth again? I would be phoning Freedom and asking what options are available. If you were to use Jif I would be testing it first somewhere not noticeable? Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Scratched acrylic surface 3Feb 23, 2011 7:38 am Good idea - will test with Jif in a corner. I actually think it will take off the sheen. It can be rebuffed but the manufacturer said that was a bit extreme for surface scracthes. Very annoying. I will pursue it with Freedom but if all else fails I will have it rebuffed when we go to sell one day and I will NEVER have acrylic surfaces in my kitchen again! Re: Scratched acrylic surface 4Feb 23, 2011 8:13 am I wouldn't be happy either with scratches so soon after installing a new kitchen. I'm about to install a new kitchen and have found H1 to be fabulous reading! Are your cabinets/doors/drawers made of the same acrylic surface as your bench top? Re: Scratched acrylic surface 5Feb 23, 2011 8:36 am Hi, one of the biggest features of acrylic benctops is that the product is able to be repaired or refinished back to its origanal state. Products such as Corian and the like, can actually be repair to the point where you can't see where the damaged occured even if you take a chunk out of the top. Scratches can be buffed out but really needs to be done by the tradesman who installed the top. I would call the kitchen supplier and have them send someone out to buff the top. Hope this helps. Kitchenpro - yes it is a good feature that it can be repaired so easily but after only 2 months use I don't think it should need repairs! I had CS in my previous kitchen and it never scratched and I even occasionally cut on it! Re: Scratched acrylic surface 7Feb 23, 2011 11:07 am H1 = Homeone (this site) . I am brand new to H1 and have read reviews on ovens/induction/vinyl wrap/2-Pac/laminate til the cows come home & still I've not decided on what to choose. I am very curious about what product you have installed - Freedom have a product called Alaskan Gloss that they used for cabinetry. Did you get this? Re: Scratched acrylic surface 8Feb 23, 2011 3:07 pm We have a solid surface benchtop which I have since found out is (made by?) Portafino. I think our cupboards are oyster linea colour - they are not gloss but a matt finish. I am happy with them and the overall look of the kitchen. It will be neat but you won't have much freeboard. At least they are not weep holes. Are you in a high intensity rainfall region?
