Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: Kitchen mixer taps - splurge or not? 21Feb 23, 2011 10:14 am Definitely splurge on a really good mixer but shop around and do your homework which I am sure you will. When we renovated a few years ago we couldn't believe how cheap the taps were at the plumbing centre - some of the bathroom retailers are outrageous with their pricing. Good luck with it! Re: Kitchen mixer taps - splurge or not? 22Mar 10, 2011 8:44 pm In this area you always PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET Not saying you need to buy the most expensive tap yet an Italian tap vs a Chinese tap cannot be compared in quality You turn a tap on and off every day so you want it to last and be quality to use. Better brands will do this not cheaper taps! I have had a Franke tap for a very long time - Pure Quality Re: Kitchen mixer taps - splurge or not? 23Mar 10, 2011 9:04 pm I once bought a cheap, no brand name mixer tap and it sprung a leak within a few days. I’ve since always spent more on a tap with a decent brand name. In the house I’m building, I’ve chosen the Dorf Kytin Single Lever Sink Mixer. Dorf is a good brand and it wasn’t over the top expensive. I don’t think a flash sink mixer will get noticed. I think as long as you have a mixer tap, that’s enough. I’d spend the money on your kitchen appliances. Re: Kitchen mixer taps - splurge or not? 24Mar 10, 2011 9:50 pm We "splurged" on all our tapware - its something which gets used constantly and you want to last. Re: Kitchen mixer taps - splurge or not? 25Apr 11, 2011 9:51 pm I bought a basic mixer for my current kitchen and end up cursing everytime I use it its either too hot or too cold.... even when I do get it at the right temperature and switch it off, and when I turn it back on at the same spot.... the temperature magically changes to boiling hot!! we are renovating the Kitchen and this time we are planning to get the oliveri SQ107 tap, not the most expensive but looks nice and hopefully will do a better job than the basic ones we were quoted $650 for it ..... any suggestions on that one? A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy? Re: Kitchen mixer taps - splurge or not? 26Apr 12, 2011 12:10 pm Sanjha, lots of places sell Oliveri so you could shop around as it looks to me like you've been quoted the recommended retail price. I compared prices on tapware from an inner-Melbourne bathroom store and then from the same chain's Thomastown store (an industrial area, further out) and was surprised by the difference - the package of bathroom taps, toilets etc was close to 25% cheaper from the plumbing supply place compared to the bathroom display store. Ring around, that's all I did and it wasn't like I even bargained, just asked for the price. From memory the Oliveri taps only come with a 12 month warranty (I could be wrong) whereas a lot of other brands come with 5 to 15 years warranty. Perhaps warranty is not really an issue - maybe they all last a lot longer before needing new parts - but I'd definitely try for a better price. I bought a Franke Zambesi gooseneck mixer as part of a package with kitchen appliances and the price came down from rrp $461 to under $300. The cheapest I'd seen that tap online was $399. There must be a lot of room for negotiation in that $650 you were quoted! Thank you so much for your advise Pippi, this has now prompted us to look at other options and we are certainly trying to get a better price... we are newbies in the reno game, so advise like yours is always very welcome. PS- you have a very good memory, the olivery comes with 1 year warranty and Franke with 5 years. A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I or are the others crazy? My thoughts exactly !! We bought an expensive "2nd Generation" Plasma TV. The "1st Generation" were about $20,000, when we bought ours we could of had a "cheaper" one for around $3,000, we purchased a top-of-the-range one for around the $5,000 mark. It's still going and still has a beautiful picture, our neighbours purchased just before we did, but got a cheaper brand. Every time we visit their place I'm glad we spent the extra, at the time we were getting rid of our 20-year-old Philips (woodgrain box ) colour TV and I thought that I didn't want to spend the next 20 years watching a cr@ppy plasma, every night wishing I'd spent the extra $$'s on a decent one !! I need too If you want a really excellent coffee machine - buy a Jura - I have one at home and it is fantastic. I have tried about 4 different brands of machines all with automatic heating/frothing and none of them were hot enough.... got the Jura and it is hot! LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT! Re: Kitchen mixer taps - splurge or not? 35Apr 19, 2011 6:03 pm If you have to use something every day, it has to be good quality so it lasts. Also, something is I was advised with our reno/extension is that some things should be WOW things whereas others could be run of the mill. So, my granite tops were a splurge and I had to have this tap with a hand spray which is great with the butler's sink. Was installing a week ago. I like it but I found the nose little be short and water running not near centre but on the back of the sink. From another end to heavy pressure of water. I try to not push too much but can't control water. Anyway I like my new tap in my new kitchen. Kitchen mixer taps - splurge or not? 40Apr 19, 2011 9:36 pm Have the same one. Some members of my family cannot drive it to save their lives LOL. Have a different one stocked in the pantry ready for when I get over it. Some things are worth waiting for.
