Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 03, 2011 1:02 pm Can anyone out there give me some advice? We just want to replace our cabinet doors on our very dark kitchen. I've had a quote from our cabinet maker for $4500 for 14 doors, which seems bloody expensive to me! They are just doors afterall! We want a vinyl wrap which I know is more expensive than some other finishes. I've found a company online that do just doors (Cabinets on demand) and their quote came to around $2700 for the same finish and same number of doors. Is there anything else I can do to keep the cost down? I'm in Adelaide. Thanks! Re: just cabinet doors 2Feb 03, 2011 2:40 pm The first price does seem a bit expensive. Do the doors from Cabinets On Demand have the hinge holes drilled? If so then their price isn't too bad, depending on the profile of the door you have chosen. Drilling hinge holes in vinyl doors is one of the worst parts of dealing with the finish if it happens after the doors are coated. There isn't much more you can do besides trying some other companies - replacing doors always has some risk for the supplier re getting the fit and drilling right and a lot of people aren't really keen to do it as you can lose your margin if something doesn't match, which is probably why the cabinet maker's price is so high. Cheers, Earl Re: just cabinet doors 3Feb 03, 2011 3:47 pm Thanks Earl. Yes the cabinets on demand company predrill holes included in the price. At least if I measure the doors myself then I have no one else to blame if they don't fit properly! I can totally understand why a cabinet maker wouldn't want the job. Firstly it's risky for them and also it doesn't bring in as much money as a whole new kitchen. But seriously, it shouldn't be this expensive! Re: just cabinet doors 4Feb 03, 2011 7:45 pm I'm pretty sure Ikea sells doors, I saw something about it in their kitchen catalogue: individually priced doors so you can update your kitchen colours. Just thought I'd mention in case yours are miraculously the same size... (Not sure if they're vinyl wrap though, sorry.) Re: just cabinet doors 6Feb 08, 2011 12:12 pm Thanks for the tip grinder! I rang a local spray painting place and I've worked out a solution. If I get doors made in MDF (and yes they drill the holes too) and then take them to the spray painter, it will cost me about $1300 for the whole kitchen! Compared to $4500 that's a pretty good deal. AND they can be whatever colour we choose. Fantastic! I have some pretty obscure door sizes so they are not standard. I guess that's why it's a more tricky job for cabinet makers. And mine probably just didn't want the job when he's bragging about doing $60,000 kitchens! Re: just cabinet doors 7Jul 25, 2012 10:43 am cabinets on demand = NIGHTMARE. Lucky you found an alternative option. You say "I have some pretty obscure door sizes so they are not standard". Based on my experience with cabinets on demand, you will send them the order, with your spec (and your money) and then they will send you whatever suits them best, not to your spec. Then you will end up paying extra to find a suitable supplier. I requested that they send me doors as per the order, and the reply was "you don't need it. use what you have got." cabinets on demand = BEST AVOIDED. we have a standard size and often we have a lot of variety to choose 0 3578 We are looking for sliding doors which are 5 metres tall. There are a few European options. Any manufacturers in Australia or distributors? 0 5044 |
