Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 02, 2011 8:34 pm I'm in the design phase of my kitchen at the moment and wanted to draw on your positive experiences in designing and building your kitchen. What did you do that a year it do later you look back and are really glad you did. I expect to pay about $25k for my kitchen so I'd like to have a few special features. A few things I'm still considering are caesarstone splashbacks, undermount sink with drainage grooves or even an induction cooktop. Any of these might be great a year down the track. What do you love? Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 2Feb 02, 2011 8:42 pm I don't have this - but I would love to find out more about them. This vacuumm trap that sits down low on the skirtking board. You sweep the scraps towards it and it opens and sucks them up. Also - because I drink a lot of tea - those taps that pour out boiling water (with safety cap) so you don't have to wait for the kettle to boil. Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 4Feb 02, 2011 9:03 pm We have one of those vacuum things in the skirting, and to be honest, have only used it once - I much prefer to vacuum daily and get everything that way - so was a bit of a waste for us - but some may find this very useful..... What you love most about your new kitchen 5Feb 02, 2011 9:32 pm One of the most useful things in my kitchen is the pullout garbages in the island. I can wipe any mess straight into it. Also the utility cupboard with the roller door very handy. Pantry that has metal shelving that comes out when the door opens....if you cant have a walk-in pantry....I would do a walk-in if possible. I have the vac thing too and use it daily, it's great. Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 6Feb 02, 2011 9:43 pm butler's pantry, pot drawers, servery window, miele dishwasher and stone tops are my favourite things about my kitchen. in about that order too "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Sorry - - I don't know if this is what you were looking for!! The gadget is called a VacuSweep or Vacpan which is part of your ducted vacuum system There is also a drawer Vac too which sits under the bench which works in a similar way but for the bench rather than the floor I like the idea of the on tap boiling water too! Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 8Feb 02, 2011 10:06 pm I love my island and stone benches. I love the fact we have no overhead cupboards barring 2 mainly used for glasses. My next kitchen will be designed totally different though. I love the pull out bins in the island and pot drawers are a must....also water tap connection for the water through the fridge. Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 10Feb 02, 2011 11:32 pm My kitchen isn't finished...but what I know I will love on my design is: - Island Bench. (my current kitchen only has 1 narrow entry/exit and it gets so annoying!) - Overhang bench to make a breakfast bar for casual eating/homework for kids when u r busy preparing dinner. - Symmetry! I know this may seem petty but for me it was important. My stove is in the centre of the bench with an even amount of cupboards on either side. I think this looks neater. (maybe im a bit weird??) - Open Plan Design. I love that I will be able to stand in my kitchen and cook and still have conversations with family in the family, dining & rumpus rooms. - WIP!!! Ask for wider shelves though. - I asked for an underbench powerpoint on the island bench. It was more expensive about $350 from memory? But i wanted the option of having power available for extra's incase you want to plug in the frypan, blender or lap top (whilst sitting in the breakfast bar) or something? We had power for microwave and dishwasher on the island but they are hidden away, I wanted a discreet extra one. [i][b]Krissy & Dave Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 11Feb 03, 2011 12:22 am I love my pull out bins, easy clean no handles, my symetrical, even lines*, my under overhead LED lights, softclose drawers/hinges, my built in water filter (we rarely need boiling water as we have a coffee machine and don't drink a lot of tea, plus much cheaper than a zipo) and my dishwasher, which was the reason we did the kitchen in the first place! * by this I mean all my 'views' are symetrical, all my drawers heights match exactly, and all my overheads are the exact same width. I knew that if any of these was out of whack it would annoy me for ever!! Things I would reconsider next time are the magic corner (a normal corner cubpoard probably would have been more practical to stuff rarely used things in and would hold more, under mount sink (our drainboard is always out anyway) and push open catches above the fridge as they bounce open when you close the door. Cheers, Earl Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 14Feb 03, 2011 8:18 am I love the amount of bench space we have. I love being able to cook at the stove top and still chat to people without having my back to them. I love the kitchen being in the heart of the house, and very open plan. I love the double power points at each end of the island. I love the profile shelf, and the overhead cupboards. I'd change our underbench cupboards for pot drawers... we fought with our builder over this, and they kept saying NO That's probably the only thing we would change. I have one of those vacusweep (kicker) things in my kitchen and I absolutely LOVE it, I would never be without it again, I use it 2 to 3 times per day, it makes cleaning the kitchen floor a 5 second job, no need to hunt around for the dustpan and brush etc. Love it. I also love my 900mm Technika oven. I love it so much. Saddest thing is, these are in my renovated kitchen in our old house which we are about to sell so we can build! I will be installing a vac kicker in the new kitchen without a doubt, and I will be getting a new 900mm Technika oven, but they don't make them the same anymore, and the new ones don't have nearly as much internal space as my 4yo oven Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 16Feb 03, 2011 6:27 pm Thanks guys. Some good ideas and feedback. Another one mentioned to me today is a mixer tap. I've never had one but it seems like a good idea. Are these a basic in a modern kitchen or do people still install double taps. Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 17Feb 03, 2011 6:45 pm oh yes my mixer tap is faaaabulous. some ppl swear by their vegie sprayer but i;ve never used one so dont know what i'm missing. would you believe the rental we lived in for a year had one but i didnt even realise it was one till the week we moved out I would reckon most builders include kitchen mixers as standard nowadays. Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 18Feb 03, 2011 6:53 pm I love my splashback window, pantry drawers and polished concrete benchtops. Re: What you love most about your new kitchen 19Feb 03, 2011 7:59 pm Strumer Hey Dollar - I am very interested in what you would do differently - very often we never hear about people's feelings about their kitchens after they have lived in them for a while so your thoughts would be very useful for future work. Cheers, Earl How exactly I'd do it I'm not sure. Budget would be a huge factor considering my idea of my next kitchen if we build again (I hope so). It's not that I don't like my kitchen-i do love it. It's just next time I wouldn't do it this way again. These are some of the styles I like.... I particularly like this idea however space will be a factor and cost. Your kitchen is stunning! I especially love the shelf you have below the overheads....I'm filing that one away for our kitchen reno...cheers! The worst thing you can do is sign a building contract without a pre contract review. Over the years many people have come to me with disputes where they just signed… 0 8339 Thank you. That is really helpful. Once we get the place done and passed for OC we can upgrade in the future once we get back on our feet and not paying mortgage and rent. 4 5727 |
