Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 02, 2011 3:03 pm Hi All, looking through a few display homes on the weekend, I noticed that several homes had island benches of 1200mm width and it truly looked impressive. Not to mention all that extra bench space! Does anyone have wide bench tops in their kitchen? Did you go for wider cupboards and benches along the wall? Is it possible to get flat pack kitchens with deeper cupboards than the standard? And what is the standard for that matter? Sorry if i sound totally confused, but I guess I am. Please help! Re: Width of Kitchen Island bench and cupboards 2Feb 02, 2011 3:05 pm Our island bench is 1.5m deep... and the cupboards underneath go 1.2m deep... not that I have any dishes that are 1.2m long... BUT it's a nice storage place for Christmas decorations etc Re: Width of Kitchen Island bench and cupboards 4Feb 02, 2011 3:35 pm We chose a 1.2m island bench with standard cupboards on the kitchen side and 300mm deep cupboards that you access from the other side so we still have 300mm overhang to use as a breakfast bar. I'm really happy with how it looks and can't wait to try it out! Re: Width of Kitchen Island bench and cupboards 5Feb 02, 2011 4:50 pm nicenurse Lovely! And would you know the depth of your wall cupboards? And the overheads? I'm wondering if there is any reason why they cant be deeper too? Re: Width of Kitchen Island bench and cupboards 6Feb 02, 2011 5:02 pm I wouldnt think you would want cupboards to be too deep, for fear of never being able to reach into the backs of them? (especially with overheads) If you got pot drawers though, would be good to have those deep, as long as they were made strong enough to hold the extra stuff you'd be putting inside them. I would definitely have gone for a wider bench if space permitted "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. I was told the maximum I could go was 900mm. Any wider and ceaserstone will void the warrNty Would love to hear if this is true Re: Width of Kitchen Island bench and cupboards 8Feb 02, 2011 5:36 pm blueblueblue For those with islands wider than 900mm, do you all have ceaserstone benchtops? I don't know how true that is. Yep, this is what the stonemason told our builder when we asked to extend our island from 900mm to 1200mm. DH redesigned it and we have two supporting cabinets on either side with a space in the middle for our bar stools (I think it only ended up costing $800 with the extra 300mm stone, two cabinets and extra support panels). Go the 1200mm - the extra 300mm is def worth it. Width of Kitchen Island bench and cupboards 13Feb 02, 2011 8:02 pm We have island of 4m x 1.2m. Narrow cupboards on overhang side, normal drawers / cupboards on kitchen side. Re: Width of Kitchen Island bench and cupboards 14Feb 02, 2011 8:06 pm Thank you all, for your responses. I am now pretty much sold on the 1200mm island bench - was hoping to have granite benchtop, so l'm not sure if that will be a problem... Now I just have to work out the other bench along the wall and the pot drawers under. Maybe 800mm. And 600mm overheads? Would that work? Width of Kitchen Island bench and cupboards 15Feb 02, 2011 8:14 pm As long as you can get the granite in the width you should be right. Our appliance side is 900mm deep but sorry don't have any overheads so can't help you there. Some things are worth waiting for. Width of Kitchen Island bench and cupboards 17Feb 02, 2011 8:21 pm I don't have any extra bracing but maybe it is because of the upstand in the centre? We have an overhang breakfast bar on each end of the island. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Width of Kitchen Island bench and cupboards 18Feb 02, 2011 8:47 pm Your kitchen is amazing kyton, and your splashback is tooo cool for words! From what I can see the 900mm wall cabinets look like they work just fine. I didnt give such matters much thought when building our current house, but with a bigger space to work with next time, I'm keen to get proportions right. Thanks again for this information.
