Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 26, 2011 9:48 pm Hi All, I want to put up two rows of open shelves above the bench top and stove on our retro 70's kitchen. The span of the back wall is 2.6m and the walls are the usual plasterboard and stud wall. Would like to keep it as "floating as possible" but want to make sure the shelves are useful for holding a few heavy items (cook books and the odd stack of plates). So would be ideal to make the depth of the shelf about 250-300mm. option a) use heavy duty "L" brackets and run them behind the shelf similar to this: http://gallery.apartmenttherapy.com/photo/10-28-08-ed-chad-tour/item/46864 option b) use a runner underneath the shelf and screw it down from the the top like this: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/inspiration/styling-inspiration-from-inspace-067737 I would like to go with option b but am scared that due to the length it'll fall forward or warp when I put something heavy on it. So any help with the best dimensions for the runner would be much appreciated. Second I just have no idea of what wood to make this out of? I need something relatively stiff and something I can get in 2.6m lengths. Thanks so much, Phill Re: DIY semi floating kitchen shelves - how to? 2Jan 27, 2011 8:35 am First of all it will come down to where the wall studs are as to how long you can have3 a single shelf. I put a couple of these up and they come in up to 1.2mt wide. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ You may be able to get wider ones, but the y won't hold a lot more weight.
