Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 09, 2007 11:21 pm is this possible? and if so is it easy to DIY (for beginners) or should i just get someone in? Can't really afford a whole new benchtop, and the laminate on it is worn in places (its white, and black is showing through), so i thought sanding it a bit and laying new laminate over the top might work? Re: re covering a bench top 2Dec 10, 2007 6:23 am Does your benchtop have a postformed (machine rolled) edge?
And to a lesser extent is your splashback tiled down to the top of the bench? Either of these factors will increase the difficulty of doing this job by yourself to the point that you may as well buy a new top. On top of this you will have to find someone like a cabinet maker or a postformer, who is able to supply you with laminates, as you can't just go to a manufacturer and buy a sheet. In all likelyhood the old one is going to have to come out anyway and the bit extra you will spend for a whole new top will be worth it in the long run. You should be able to find someone who will supply you with a made to measure new benchtop including routed masons mitre joins for about $155 a linear metre (600mm deep). Cheers, Earl Re: re covering a bench top 3Dec 10, 2007 7:31 am I agree with Earl. I'm an avid DIY, and do nearly everything myself, but it's just so much easier to get someone to do the benchtops to the right size (you still install them yourself) and it's bugger-all more than just straight supply.
I recently did my best mate's mum's kitchen. Apart from the hassle of looking for laminate suppliers, there's also the difficulty of gluing it down accurately - and the glue cost. This particular bench was only 2 sides, 600mm deep, right angle corner, rolled front edge, and a sink cutout. The room wasn't square (none really are in any house!) so it needed a little tweaking to get it spot on. One length of top cost us$240 for a 3.6m length, and the other shorter one (2400 from memory) was $150 - this was direct from a kitchen supplier in Wetherill Park, NSW. I have a feeling these may have been leftover or excess stock, so don't count on the prices. I spent a good 2 hours getting the corner joint spot on (45 degree cut in the rolled edge, then 90 degrees across the flat section, with a small amount taken off the other piece to meet it). I also did the mitres in the base of the top, so it could be assembled with the corner clamps (relatively easy with a router). To get a perfect corner I cut it close with the circular saw (jigsaw on the angles), then used the routerup against a clamped straight edge, and a file to get a perfect 45 degree internal corner. We were so happy with it, that he decided he was going to redo the laundry as well. Went back to get another length, and they asked us how it went. I described how I did the corner & a 5mm angled shave amlong one edge to meet the wall nicely, and he then informed us that they would have cut the corners & done the corner joint reliefs, as well as a sink cutout, all ready to go, for less than $80 on top of the supply price! That $80 soon looked very appealing compared to the hours spent getting it right - I will not do another corner again! Re: re covering a bench top 5Dec 13, 2007 2:33 pm the bench top doesn't have a postformed edge, its white laminate with obvious black joins?
the cupboard doors do though, the laminate rolls right over and around like contact, but they're likely going in the bin as they're chipboard and, well, chipped! The splashback is tiled to the top of the benchtop, there are actually two "benchtops", the main one, and the one where the hotplates are on the opposite sides of the galley style kitchen. Whats the rough price difference between getting someone to put new laminate over the top, and getting a whole new benchtop/s? Re: re covering a bench top 6Dec 17, 2007 8:02 pm Just buy new benchtops.
Benchtops for a medium size kitchen usually cost less than $1000 + Fitting. Re-Laminating benchtops looks crappy and doesnt last as long as new tops. Square edged kitchen tops are a waste of time. The edges chip easily and let moisture in. Building Standards; Getting It Right! These can be easily filled and repaired and it doesn't cost them much to do. Id get the builder to do this first and if the repair is not suitable then a replacement is… 12 31281 Thanks Ardo, they are sort of semi concealed. I think it is only a few millimetres.
