Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 07, 2007 2:21 pm Hi, I'm new here.
Just wondering if ppl are willing to critic my own kitchen design. It's a largish kitchen 5.5m x 4.5m with the fridge/pantry, cooktop and sink all on different walls and a plain island bench in the middle as preparation space. Because of the size of the room, I can't get the working triangle to <6m. Any comments appreciated. This is how they are normally designed. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Which you have done. I think it’s more important to get the distance from the sink to the stove right than worry how far away your fridge is. With an Island Bench…..you can’t go wrong. I think you have done a good job. The Island Bench fills in the walking space from A, B & C. Sink, Stove, & Fringe. Another alternative is to turn the Island Bench around, giving you more room in the centre of the space. I have a couple of times put the island benches on caster wheels, with locks, so it can be moved where you like it to be. But this depends on the weight and size of the bench. I'd spin the bench 90 degrees - that way you can take things to and from the bench to the fridge - and the same from stove to bench - sink to bench etc, as this type of kitchen you tend yo sue the island bench as a work area more than the wall benches. Steve Re: Kitchen layout 6Dec 09, 2007 8:07 am To get the fridge closer, you could always shortern the window on the sink side and place it at the outer edge. Not sure if this is possible and if you would want to as the windows sizes and arrangements look good.
You could then use the space on the other side for more storage. It seems a long way to go get the milk when making coffee. MJ Re: Kitchen layout 7Dec 11, 2007 8:53 am The reason why I put the fridge there is because that's the food storage area. Get coffee out of the pantry, milk out of fridge and coffee machine in that full height cupboard next to cooktop.
True it's too far from the sink, but I imagine to have the fridge and pantry separated would be more logistically challenging. Anyone know of it's possible to put caster wheels on island bench this size (2.1x1.2m - stone benchtop). Re: Kitchen layout 8Dec 11, 2007 8:57 am What flooring are you going to have in the kitchen?

It makes a difference for the casters to roll on……. Have to say, the floorcoverings in your pics (Mish) looks a bit weird! Do you think big red triangles is going to catch on? Ash. Re: Kitchen layout 10Dec 11, 2007 9:14 am Its all about the flow Ash!!!

Janka hardness of 14 or so, shouldn't scratch or dent. My brother in law has tassie oak in the kitchen, he moved his fridge and it left very noticable wheel dents on the floor!!! Re: Kitchen layout 14Dec 12, 2007 9:26 am I think your island bench is a nice size, and the casters should take the weight fine.
Make sure you put caters at both ends as well as the both sides in centre, for extra support through there!! Bamboo flooring…..mmmm of my favourite!!! Very strong and sturdy!
