How big is the window? maybe you could have it quite small, so it would let light in but not too much heat. You can get tinting added afterwards. Also, will it bother you to know people can look through to see what you have in your pantry? If you did go ahead with a window, you could get low-e glass. A cheaper option would be to use obscure glass or tinted glass - it will still let enough light in. You can also reduce the window size, it will make the window less expensive, whilst providing natural light. Double glazing can help maintain temperature in a room, especially if you use upvc or wood frame. Oh Ok, made my comment about best not to have a window assuming it was open shelving as I thought that's what pantries had - however if you have cabinets with doors in there, then a window is fine - thats no different to haveing food in cupboards in a kitchen with a window Quote: Also, will it bother you to know people can look through to see what you have in your pantry? Cant imagine anyone getting too excited peeping through a window and seeing vegetables, jams, tins of food.... There will be cabinets under the work bench that sits under the 90cm x 90cm window. The bench is L shaped and is 1.65m on the long axis. The bench wraps around the corner where it meets floor to ceiling open shelving. Will have to make sure I keep the No Frills brands to the rear of the shelves! Seriously it won't bother me. Windowfactory Hi, If you did go ahead with a window, you could get low-e glass. The low-e glass combined with a blind might be the way to go. Re: Window in Pantry - Is it a good idea? 25Jan 04, 2011 11:29 am nerak, For what you want to achieve, a skylight would be best. 1) It gives you light 2) You maintain provacy 3) The room won't overheat in summer 4) You keep the wall for shelves or other useful purposes. Make sure the skylight is shielded from direct sunlight in summer. Firends of ours have that setup and it works really well. You can get skylights that can span storeys. They use optical fibres to pass the light from the collector to the emitter (and probably reduce heat transfer, which is a bonus). I've never heard of them, are they pricey? A friend has a two storey home and thought a skylight wasn't possible, she may be interested. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Window in Pantry - Is it a good idea? 30Jan 05, 2011 6:46 pm Try looking for Skydome DayRay (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... clnk&gl=au). the product was announced a few years ago andI saw it at a home show a couple of years ago, but it doesn't appear to be in the market. The site I've included is a cached site. Perhaps a cal to Skydome will shed some light (pun intended). Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Basically.
