Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 30, 2010 3:49 pm Hi all, I'm contemplating what kind of lighting to use as downlighting for my benchtop. My kitchen is mostly Ikea so I'm looking at their very cheap lights. Only problem is they are halogen - expensive and they create a lot of heat. I'm not sure if there will be bulbs available in LED to replace them. Here is a pic - set of 3 only costs $30 to buy. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I have looked in the local light shops for alternatives but most have the cords coming out in a way that you have to drill through the cupboard bottom to install - thus creating a need for a false bottom. As I already have my Ikea wall cabinets, I'd like to avoid this. Has anyone else been through this or have any suggestions? If you have seen anything like what is pictured here in a lighting shop, please let me know. Thanks, Seashell Seashell Re: Ikea down lighting under top cupboards onto bench 2Dec 31, 2010 10:01 am That I know of, most halogen lights need to be powered by electricity source i.e. powerpoint and transformer. LED do not and there are plenty of lights out there they can be battery power ones. Re: Ikea down lighting under top cupboards onto bench 3Dec 31, 2010 3:29 pm Thanks Grinder, Not sure if there is that much to choose from where i am, the selection of led lighting is tiny. I get the impression the industry has a long way to go before led is a practical alternative. It doesn't seem bright enough to do the job. The only thing I can find that is reasonable is the flat compact fluorescent downlights. Still trying to figure out how they are wired though. I have also heard they can take a while to get to full brightness which would be a pain. I found this article which is a bit old but still helpful: http://www.diynot.com/wiki/electrics:li ... lamps:gu10 I've seen some much more compact models of fluorescent than the one shown here. But I'm still not convinced they would be anywhere near as good as halogen. The ones I've got were discontinued size (70 and 92 cm) and I only paid $20 each! I wish I'd just bought those in the first place Still, I might replace the one's I've got with those as that would certainly solve the problem and it's worth a bit extra to get it right. I had no idea these were available. Cheers! Seashell Re: Ikea down lighting under top cupboards onto bench 7Jan 04, 2011 7:48 pm Oh! Sorry, I've just realised the shelf itself can be used in the existing 60cm wide units I've got. Does the light go upwards as well as downwards? I have glass shelves for the units so that would work a treat! Thanks again Seashell Re: Ikea down lighting under top cupboards onto bench 8Jan 04, 2011 10:41 pm seashell Oh! Re: Ikea down lighting under top cupboards onto bench 9Jan 06, 2011 10:42 am Thanks Jaeger, I've sent someone off to Ikea to pick these up for me today. I'm quite excited! The top cabinets aren't up yet, just built and stacked against the wall. We should be able to pull them apart and put together again with the new light shelves. It will save me the bother of putting in lights in the tops of the cabinets as well as the downlights. Will hunt around to see if I've got a 'before' pic of my kitchen. It was really terrible. Is half built just now and already looking a lot better, but I'll post a pic once I get these top cabinets in Seashell Re: Ikea down lighting under top cupboards onto bench 10Jan 06, 2011 1:50 pm I just remember, you'll need to buy the cord separately. Forgot the name but you can look it up from the link above, it tells you the name of the cord. Re: Ikea down lighting under top cupboards onto bench 11Jan 11, 2011 11:08 pm Hi If you want to change the lights to LED you are better of buying the strip LED lights. Unfortunately they dont make LED globes for those fittings you pictured. Not only that, LED need a driver to run. The LED downlight globes have that built in hence why they are $40+ each. Plus the strip lighting is longer, costs less to run, changes colour, and take up less room so possibly hidden from view. Building Standards; Getting It Right! These can be easily filled and repaired and it doesn't cost them much to do. Id get the builder to do this first and if the repair is not suitable then a replacement is… 12 31266 Thanks Ardo, they are sort of semi concealed. I think it is only a few millimetres. I see if they can adjust the hinges. 4 3799 Hi, Can anyone give me approx. price for overhead cupboards. TIA 0 16599 |
