Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Dec 16, 2009 8:59 pm Although my kitchen is still non-existent, I've been worrying about where I was going to put my rubbish bin. We did our kitchen selections months ago, but today I finally decided to bite the bullet and see if I could make a variation - all the while worrying about the cost. I decided to get the end cupboard on our island sectioned off from the rest of the cupboards. By that I mean, no shelf through the middle and a side panel so the things in the cupboard next door won't possibly be able to touch the bin. I got the idea from someone on here (not sure who, sorry ) who had a whole cupboard space made into a big drawer for her bin to go in. Just wondering what you all did to hide your bins? Did you have a place specially made for them, or do you just have it sitting next to the fridge / bench? i never seem to see a bin in anyone's photos so either they move them for the pictures, have a hidey spot, or don't have one ! Oh, and for the record, I also changed 2 cupboards to 3 pot drawers and got the separate bin cupboard for $110!! Bargain of my life Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 2Dec 16, 2009 9:08 pm Ok now I REALLY wish we had have thought of that before!!!!! Damn it. I want a bin in the cupboard, and sure enough we have a shelf on the plans that divides the cupboard in half. How did I never think about this!!!????? Chris says it will be really easy for him to chop the shelf out.... I'm not so sure that's the best way to go about it.... Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 3Dec 16, 2009 9:35 pm So do you think you will cut the shelf out felistopher? Do you have a bit of spare room next to your fridge to put a bin? That's what I was going to do - get a slimline bin and hide it in there. Glad I don't have to now! Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 4Dec 16, 2009 9:42 pm You've got me all pumped about this now dilla!!! I'm so pleased you raised it so we can decide before the cabinets go in what we want. Not enough space next to the fridge, so that's out. I reckon it would be really easy to email our admin and ask for the divider shelf to be left out of one of the cupboards. Just not sure which one would be the best position for the bin but there's really only two options- next to the stove or to the left of the sink..... I'm trying to imagine which bench I'll use most for food prep What do you think?? Here's our base cabinet layout (bird's eye) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 6Dec 16, 2009 9:53 pm Felistopher Ok now I REALLY wish we had have thought of that before!!!!! Chris says it will be really easy for him to chop the shelf out.... I'm not so sure that's the best way to go about it.... I have undermount sinks, and currently the shelf is sitting in my pantry, it kinda defeats the purpose of putting the shelf in, as there is not really much room on top of the sheft as that is filled with sink. My plan was to have my bin under the sink, but I will need to buy a smaller bin, currently its next to the fridge. Felistopher my kitchen is similar to yours but I have the fridge in that void of your pantry. You could loose a door and do the same. Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 7Dec 16, 2009 9:55 pm Your kitchen layout is nearly exactly the same as mine When I tried to explain what I wanted, the kitchen lady suggested I take the shelf out under the sink and use that cupboard, but I don't think you would be able to fit a decent sized bin under the sink. I ended up convincing her that I wanted the cupboard on the far left as my 'bin cupboard'. I think I will be making most of the mess near the sink - peeling vegies etc, so wanted it close by. I don't think next to the oven would be as good a place because I doubt you'll do your 'prep' work over there - the light won't be as good, you'll be facing the wall instead of facing out to the living area and talking - it's much more social to do the 'prep' work on the island bench and the cooking only on the oven side. I'd think it would be more convenient on the island. Also, if I was cooking, I wouldn't want someone trying to get under my feet to use the bin. The island bin cupboard would be more 'out of the way of all the action'! Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 8Dec 16, 2009 10:18 pm Ours is in the island as well. We don't have one anywhere except in the pantry at the moment so really looking forward to the bin in the island. Initially it wasn't something we thought about, then it was suggested to us by kitchen company. I have no regrets. It's annoying using either a plastic bag somewhere or having to always walk into the pantry just to throw something out. Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 9Dec 16, 2009 10:25 pm My bin is a pull out thingy under the sink. its 2 smaller compartments that i just line with plastic shopping bags. I would have liked a larger bin but it wouldnt fit under the sink. I have seen those island benches with a cut out chute for waste, would be great for vegie scraps and u have a lid when your finished. Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 10Dec 16, 2009 10:48 pm Mine is the same Mango - front bin for rubbisha nd back one for recyles, fits in cupboard under the sink - it is a U shaped kitchen though - why is that different to going under the sink in an island bench? Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 11Dec 16, 2009 11:00 pm Helyn & Mango I think I've seen those bins you are talking about. At the moment we have quite a small bin and it drives me crazy that we have to change the bag over so often, that's why I decided to section off the cupboard. Do you know if you can get the same sort of thing but bigger? I like the idea of having something I could attach to the inside of the cupboard and pull out. Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 12Dec 16, 2009 11:03 pm My bin is currently in the garage - the door to the garage goes straight into the kitchen (next to the stove actually LOL). Not sure where its going to go in the new house... probably next to the bench viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris. Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 13Dec 16, 2009 11:08 pm Dilla- Yes i have seen those larger pull out bins, I'm sure the kitchen company would be able to change the size for u. If you have the space it would be great. The small one is ok for us as i just didnt want to take up drawer space with a bin. Can fill up too quickly during dinner parties though and the recycle fills up way to quickly with bottles. We have an elevated house and hubby put our bin on a string so u just go out to the verandah and pull the rope to open the lid, no walking down stairs required. I love it! Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 14Dec 16, 2009 11:31 pm If only I had of thought about this before my kitchen was built!!! We ended up getting a slide out bin for the cupboard anyway, but a built-in one would have been much nicer! When we moved in we originally had a bin in the pantry but it was too much of a PITA to walk into the pantry to throw something out. Also, it made the pantry smell The one we got fitted perfectly into the top shelf of the cupboard, just needed a couple of screws to hold it in place. When it slides back in its fully enclosed so it doesn't stink out the rest of the cupboard (its not a sectioned of cupboard unfortunately ). We got it from Bunnings, the brand is Kimberely (http://www.kimprod.com.au/waste.htm) and they were very reasonably priced compared to a few others we looked at. Not a bad solution as an after-thought, I love being able to slide my scraps off the bench straight into the cupboard below! http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss285/shellhow/IMG_0425MediumSmall.jpg Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 15Dec 17, 2009 1:40 am I'm getting a bin cupboard put in, so it pulls out like an underbench pull out pantry, except surprise! Rubbish, not food I wanted a pull out linen hamper cupboard too in my laundry but sadly there wasn't enough room if I wanted my linen cupboard with broom/ironing board section. I might just buy a basket to put in the linen and remove the lowest shelf to fit it. If I had thought about it better I would have MADE it fit, so it's driving me bonkers now cos I don't want to be able to see a linen hamper!!! So trust me, do what you can to get your bin hidden, you'll be glad you did! Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 16Dec 17, 2009 8:41 am buildingwithhamra Felistopher my kitchen is similar to yours but I have the fridge in that void of your pantry. You could loose a door and do the same. That's a good idea but we can't do it unfortunately. I had asked for that void to be shelving space (as I thought its only purpose was for return air, and we're getting refrig air con) but Henley said they need the void for plumbing pipes, which I can see they put in when the slab was poured. dilla Your kitchen layout is nearly exactly the same as mine When I tried to explain what I wanted, the kitchen lady suggested I take the shelf out under the sink and use that cupboard, but I don't think you would be able to fit a decent sized bin under the sink. The island bin cupboard would be more 'out of the way of all the action'! Everything you say makes sense. I don't think I'd get a large enough one under the sink either. And you're right, I'll probably do most prep on the island bench next to the sink. That looks like a goer.... shell83 The one we got fitted perfectly into the top shelf of the cupboard, just needed a couple of screws to hold it in place. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I did a bit of research last night and I know the one you're talking about shell! I think we'll go for this one because it is the biggest double bin I can find (32 litres for each bin) and it uses up all the cupboard space. It's the one in the bottom right hand corner of the page. Found it at http://www.thestorageshop.net.au/pullout_bins.html Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 17Dec 17, 2009 8:58 am Wow! So many combinations. Ours looks like a cupboard but with a horizontal handle and which pulls the bin out. Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 18Dec 17, 2009 12:31 pm shell83 - that is exactly our bin I find it a good size and easy to use - we recycle all our tins, jars, boxes etc, and have a separate box next to the bin for paper recycles so the rubbish only has to be emptied about every 2nd day (household of 3 people), also the plastic shopping bags are a perfect fit as liners. Utilises the wasted space under the sink too - if you dont have the bin there, what will you use this space for? I think they look nice enough - anyway it is behind closed doors most of the time so appearance wasnt really the issue Single use plastic shopping bags are banned in SA now but I still have a stock pile from before the ban Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 19Dec 17, 2009 12:44 pm Dollar Wow! So many combinations. Ours looks like a cupboard but with a horizontal handle and which pulls the bin out. Yes that is how mine will look! Wish my kitchen was in so I could take a photo Hopefully not too much longer til it's finished!! Re: Where do you put your rubbish bin? 20Dec 17, 2009 12:54 pm We have ages to wait Katie. Only up to the plastering. I am looking forward to using the bin! 0 1547 Thanks mate. Yeah good points!
