Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Nov 17, 2010 9:17 am Hi everyone, Its all getting really exciting with our build the builders are up to the framing stage, with what seemed like forever to get to this stage! We had issues with price/costing for our flooring which is....polished concrete! Very excited about this, almost gave up with builders and thought tiling/floorboards would be easier but hubby and I perservered and we now have finally have it! Now....I am up to kitchen selections I would love some suggestions from others, after admiring everyones kitchens in other threads! Vinyl Wrap kitchen in Classic White gloss, with feature cupboards in aluminium/white frosted glass Chunky long handles Quatum Quartz benchtops in possibly, luna white or ice Splashback in choc/mocha??? Love duck egg blue or an army green, not sure... Floor is a beige/brown with dark stone and white pebbles running through Walls: either China White/Hogsbristle half What do you think.....House isn't really modern, our furniture is more eclectic if that makes sense. Thanks in advance Re: Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 2Nov 17, 2010 9:46 am I would have loved a duck egg blue splashback, I couldn't talk DH into it! my new build thread- Ben Trager https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89826 my switch build thread (2011) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36569 Re: Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 3Nov 17, 2010 9:51 am Absolutely love polished concrete both from a "look" point of view and from a practicality point of view. Would have done it ourselves had we been on a slab. My other comments, Vinyl wrap - price up 2pac, you may find it is not that much more expensive and it is a better look, finish and feel. Chunky handles - should be OK. I like the handleless look personally but if you are going to have handles may as well make a statement. Quantum Quartz - this is what we used. I loved the Ice but we went with Turino just because it camouflaged crumbs and whatnot better. Both look great. Splashback - The rest of your surface choices have little or no movement and color. A solid color glass splashback does not really add a lot and glass is a bit ho hum nowadays......go to a good upmarket tile shop and look at some tile options for color and movement. People will tell you tiles are high maintenance but they really aren't and they will cmouflage far better than glass. Have a look anyway. Floor - sounds good. Ours is a darker brown bamboo and we have the gloss white cabinetry and a white base Quantum Quartz benchtop, it looks good. Walls - We had China White in our previous homes living room. This color is very grey on the wall, in fact "China White is a misnomer it is far more grey than white. I love the color but I think it may bring your kitchen "down". Would not even consider Hog's Bristle. Anything with a yellow or cream in it will clash with your white cabinets. We have Antique USA on the walls...works well and your color scheme is very similar to ours. Re: Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 4Nov 17, 2010 10:54 am Interesting comment about Glass splashbacks being ho hum these days. A couple of the companies that visited us during the design/quote phase said a similar things. We were told its more enduring from a look and style perspective to tile or even use the same benchtop material and colour in a 20mm as a splash(if u can get it in 20mm that is) Re: Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 5Nov 17, 2010 11:14 am DawnDrifter Interesting comment about Glass splashbacks being ho hum these days. Glass is a very practical surface and some people are doing some great design things with it and because of this it will always be popular but I think the block colors have had their day. Tiles can be hit and miss. But if you look at some cutting edge stuff, the architectural tiles, they will be pretty timeless and you can make some serious statements.. Ultimately, most kitchens are going to be showing their age at 10 years regardless of what you use. Re: Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 7Nov 17, 2010 2:31 pm Thanks Pattycake but when you do these things yourself you quickly learn from your mistakes!! That is the value of a place like this, you can speak to people who made all the mistakes before you do. Re: Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 8Nov 17, 2010 2:37 pm Yes I think we have all said, next time I would etc etc. Re: Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 9Nov 17, 2010 2:46 pm Yes for sure. My absolute must do tips of renovating a kitchen would be, Use a professional color consultant. Colors never look the same when they are up on the walls, cabinets, splashbacks and floors. Plumb water to behind the fridge even if your current fridge does not need to be plumbed in, Get the best rangehood you can afford, Do a map of all the things that are going in your drawers then make sure your drawers are the sizes you need (learnt that from experience), Test bench heights. There is no standard bench height nowadays but the default is 900mm and that may not suit. Re: Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 10Nov 17, 2010 2:50 pm I agree with plumbing for fridge and rangehood. Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 11Nov 18, 2010 4:28 pm Don't forget that glass splashs can be more then just a simple sheet of glass. You can have slumped glass with gorgeous patterns in it or alternatively something like mine which is a picture on the glass of our favorite place in the world. Some things are worth waiting for. I remember your splashback Kyton...is it the scene of a bay?....it looked fantastic. My comments concerning glass splashbacks was about the "block" color approach. As I said above there are some people doing fantastic things with glass (including you). Someone i know said they had a friend who had a red splashback and had put a black decal on it and it looked fabulous. It's a thought. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. We looked at glass ten years ago when we built our first home but back then it was new and reallllllllllly pricey!! But I fell in love with a slump glass splash - we were told we could customise the pattern by drawing / inserting any items into the sand used to make the pattern on the reverse side of the glass. It has always stuck in my head as something that could be amazingly special. In two of our previous homes we used starfire glass sprayed stainless steel which tied in with the colour schemes of those kitchens. This time I wanted something special that would highlight all the blue in our kitchen - hence the picture of the beach. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 16Nov 23, 2010 12:15 am we've also got polished concrete going in. I want my floors to be a feauture and whilst I want my kitchen to have a wow factor I also want it to blend in. Like yourself we will go mostly white except for splashback. I think you need to stick with an earthy colour to go with your floors. Which company/colour are you using for concrete? Re: Suggestions please kitchen gurus! 17Nov 27, 2010 10:03 am While 2pak cuboards look lovely, i have spoken to quite a few people lately who have them and dont like them. Apparently they chip very easily and are not little people friendly. Laminex do have 2 styles of gloss cpboards, they have the silk and another glossier type - not sure what its called. Perhaps worth checking out all 3 options and deciding which one suits you. I have gone for large (600x600m - oh i have actually seen 1200x600 tiles -WOW but have heard they are REALLY expensive to lay due to the difficulty in handling) rectified tiles for my splashback - thse are nice in my opinion, and have minimal grout - so easier for cleaning. Melrich, i love the suggestion re a colour consultant - i am terrible with visualizing colours together, so need all the help i can get. I have only ever had old wooden 50 yr old kitchens, that are painted. so I am not sure, but I hear they are much harder wearing. 2 pac is dearer...if I am paying more, I would want a better product. just be aware they may chip, that is all.
