Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Nov 14, 2010 7:05 pm Hi, This is my first time posting and I am so pleased to have found this site. I am building a house on my own for myself and my two young boys and look forward to being able to get advice and opinions. I have recently been in a DA display home and liked the way they added some extra storage to their island bench. Thanks for looking, SannieB Re: Please help with island bench ideas. 2Nov 15, 2010 8:53 am I don't see why not, Sanni. i can't quite make it out on my screen, but is it already on the plan at the opposite end from the sink? The only thing I would say is that it doesn't look like you have a lot of room as a walkway on either side of the island. If you did it. I would take a little room off the bench space so it's still about the same length as the bench behind. Re: Please help with island bench ideas. 3Nov 15, 2010 10:23 am Depends where you are putting it? We have pretty much the exact setup but ours is on the front of our island bench (forms the splashback for our sink). If you placed it on either end of your island it may impact on your walk through. IMO you always need to allow for 1.5m between the island and any adjoining walls - to allow for traffic / moving large items in and out of the room. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Please help with island bench ideas. 4Nov 23, 2010 12:03 am You don't have enough room to do it at the sides. How long is your island bench? If you had enough space you could centralise the sink and as Kyton has done, use it as a splashback. Looking at the small size of the plans though I'm not sure it would leave you enough prep size either side of your kitchen. If it is storage you are after, why not thicken the island itself and you can have hidden cupboards under the overhang/waterfall. How thick is the island? Our current plan has a 1.2m thick island (although i'm currently consulating with a kitchen designer).
