Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Nov 08, 2010 8:28 pm Hi, I need some advice on the correct installation of a new set of kitchen cabinets against a newly framed stud wall. On top of the cabinets will be a 20mm stone benchtop and a glass splash back from ceiling to bench. I had a few things I'm not sure about. 1. Should the cabinets be installed flush to the stud wall? Or should the wall be covered with Gyprock from floor to ceiling? 2. If the above answer is no, does there need to be a lining behind the glass splash back? 3. (Now it get's a bit confusing... I think ) If the cabinets need to be flush with the studs, but the splash back needs to be lined, is the lining for the splash back installed before the benchtop or after and sits flush with the top of the stone bench? Hope someone knows what I'm asking. Thanks Shoulda been a tradie... Coulda been a handyman... Woulda had too many injuries... Wait... I get those anyway! Stuck behind a desk I guess. Jack of All... In our case, the plasterboard was fully installed, the kitchen is just going in (against the plasterboard) and the glass splashback will be installed against the plasterboard after the benchtop. As I'm a noob could you point me in the direction of the new build threads you mentioned? I figured that the wall should be lined but thought I could possibly save a few bucks on materials. A picture's worth a thousand words. I was wondering why you get to have sooo many gold stars under your name and a quick read through your thread revealed why. You post a lot! Never been into forums or the likes, but I'm always getting asked to do bits and peices (chunks and slabs) of work around home and for the family, so looks like this might be a handy place to visit from time to time. Thanks again Dee. Shoulda been a tradie... Coulda been a handyman... Woulda had too many injuries... Wait... I get those anyway! Stuck behind a desk I guess. Jack of All... Not that you would expect any inconsistencies of colour depth in the splash back but if wall and splashback are all the same colour then colour variation should not occur. Re: New kitchen cabinets on new stud wall 8Nov 09, 2010 12:42 pm Thanks barkly. Haven't looked into splashbacks yet as I was concerned about the order of things. That will be the next job so I will definitely give it a paint once I know the color. Shoulda been a tradie... Coulda been a handyman... Woulda had too many injuries... Wait... I get those anyway! If you put your cabinets against the pasterboards that means ripping the whole thing off whenever you decide to install a new kitchen. cabinet makers often place a board of their own between cabinets and plasterboard to cover for imperfections, cabling and other things. Splashbacks are fine except for the region where the cooker/cooktop goes it needs to have a fire rated board 6 0r 9mm in that area the rest any board will do. Re: New kitchen cabinets on new stud wall 10Nov 10, 2010 9:11 am Thanks grinder. Hopefully I won't need to change kitchen cabinets and it's a fairly small area (therefore kitchen) which doesn't allow for much change. I think the most I'll ever end up doing is changing the doors so the carcas will stay. Thanks for the tip on the fire proofing! Shoulda been a tradie... Coulda been a handyman... Master of None You can really use anything you want the main consideration would be how it looks once painted/finished - or the look you want. Cabinetmakers use MDF because its cheap… 2 9959 Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive). Would require a mini… 13 39690 Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that. Have a good day 4 5179 |
