Main reason for this is that if the wall runs in at all then the drawers might end up fouling on it (and I have never seen a perfectly straight wall, even on new builds). Drawer fronts themselves are normally 1.5mm to 2mm narrower than the carcass on each side so if the cabinet gable and the wall are perfectly parallel you might just get away with it; but this narrow clearance is also a finger trap/pinch hazard and can cause quite a bit of pain so if you can mange to squeeze an infill in I would.
