Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 18, 2010 12:51 pm Just trying to find some bar stools to go under our island bench and wanted to hear whether people find ones with backs or without better? Our island bench contains the cooktop and rangehood but will be made wide enough with an oversized overhang to fit 5 stools comfortably (3 across the front, 2 around the side) without touching the hot space. There is plenty of walkway space around it, we have 2 young children who use it for most meals apart from dinner at the dining table and most of our parties & BBQs always end up in the kitchen So what do you have and how do you find it for (a) comfort, (b) ease of cleaning and (c) does it knock against the bench or back panels? We currently have two old red stools from our old kitchen but they spin around which is annoying when the kids bang them into the bench and the large circular base is constantly covered in dust & dog hair so only looks good once or twice a week. If you have pics, please share Re: Bar Stools with or without backs - what do you prefer? 2Oct 18, 2010 2:56 pm I specifically bought stools with backs because I worried about our kids falling backwards from ones without backs. The continual spinning and bench-banging drives me nuts too! As does their rocking, which will also break the stools eventually... I agree with you about the silver circle base collecting dust too! I hate how messy it looks! I read in a magazine that stools without backs prevent kids rocking on the stools - don't know how true that is, but next time I will be definitely be going for four-legged backless stools. DH laughs at me all the time because I will not sit on any stool without a back...... Our 4 barstools all have backs which I think is a lot safer for our kidlets (aged 5, 3 and too little at present 9mths) Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Bar Stools with or without backs - what do you prefer? 4Oct 19, 2010 8:58 am I dont have any little kids but I do think stools with backs are more comfortable - ours are traditional style timber on 4 legs so you cant spin them anyway. Re: Bar Stools with or without backs - what do you prefer? 5Oct 19, 2010 10:13 am I love the look of the stools with no back but I can't stand sitting on them! I've got kids too so we'll be getting ones with backs on them. We bought them both red stokke chairs when they were tots and they are still using. They will be the only ones using the bar so best to have chairs for them. Re: Bar Stools with or without backs - what do you prefer? 7Oct 20, 2010 2:02 am I find bar stools without backs really uncomfortable, so mine have backs. I know what you mean about the silver bases, but it's something I can live with. I've seen some in the Kitchen & Bathrooms Quarterly in an ad for Harvey Norman Renovations but no luck in finding them. They have the base like this but the white leather / vinyl goes up the back as well: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I also love the Emeco Navy Bar Stool but heard the seat is cold on the bottom. I like the shape of it though so if anyone can show me a combination of both, that would be perfect Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Bar Stools with or without backs - what do you prefer? 13Nov 22, 2010 7:39 am I'm going to be different and say I like the ones with no backs. I've never sat on any that feel sturdy enough to actually lean back on, I always feel like I'm going to fall back if I lean back to far lol. I also like being able to tuck then in under the bench and out of site. I've got cheapo ones at the moment, and they have lasted years and I've sat on the for hours drinking and never gotten uncomfortable and I have a really bad back! I have little kids too and never had a problem with them falling off, the way they sit on stools is different to normal chairs Re: Bar Stools with or without backs - what do you prefer? 14Nov 22, 2010 9:10 pm Our stools do not have any backs. I find that I actually sit up nice and straight in them. No need to lean on the bench either. Probably not good for the little ones to sit on though. It would be a bit hard for them to stay on especially if they swivel and the big kids give them a spin Re: Bar Stools with or without backs - what do you prefer? 15Nov 22, 2010 9:26 pm I prefer the aesthetics of stools without backs and as I'm not exactly tall and my legs aren't exactly long I find it more uncomfortable to sit on the front edge of the stool Re: Bar Stools with or without backs - what do you prefer? 16Dec 01, 2010 12:01 pm These are the most comfortable chairs, ever! Got them from the Reject shop, about $100 each. Very stable. Also don't like one's that spin either. We got some black leather chairs recently in a relocating sale, so they are all ready to go when we get the house. I loved the look of white leather but decided that black leather will look great too. I would also love to be able to get these stools though.
