Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 02, 2010 4:32 pm Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and I'm madly searching the archives to draw on all your knowledge! But I couldn't find a recent topic addressing painting two pack kitchen cupboards. Can it be done? If so, with what... and how to prepare the cupboards? Would I be wiser just to get new cabinet doors? That sounds expensive. I guess at the end of the day, I want to do a cheap 'refresh'... so splashback cream tiles will be painted with White Knight tile paint (I think that's what it's called, right?), new grout... replace the cream coloured plastic sink with a stainless steel one... and I thought I'd try to turn the cream cupboards white... somehow! Give it to me straight. If you think I'm silly, tell me. I can take it! Re: Painting two pack? 2Sep 02, 2010 4:35 pm I think anyone who wants to try and two pack their own kitchen without experience or the correct equipment is in for a world of pain. Re: Painting two pack? 3Sep 02, 2010 4:55 pm Hehe... you're probably right. And I definitely don't have experience OR the right equipment. I'm just a girl who desperately wants to do some DIY and not have it look TOO *******. The truth is, I don't even understand what kind of finish two pack is. OR whether or not my existing cupboards ARE two pack. A tradesperson in our house a few weeks back said they were... but they look like laminate to me. They're just a very plain, flat finish... not a gloss. They were installed when the house was built, 14 years ago. If they were laminate... would I be able to repaint them? Or is painting cupboards just a bad idea all 'round? Re: Painting two pack? 4Sep 02, 2010 5:02 pm Laminate is a covering so trying to paint that is going to make the paint stick out like ******* you know what. Replace the existing doors with laminated doors. Cheap! Measure up the size of the doors and have someone make them up for you. There are companies that just make doors! Then unscrew the old ones and replace with your new ones. Re: Painting two pack? 5Sep 02, 2010 5:32 pm You will never get close to the finish you want by trying to paint yourself. You certainly won't be able to apply a 2pac. As another poster suggested, try replacing your cupboard doors and drawer fronts with laminates. Should not be too expensive. Re: Painting two pack? 6Sep 02, 2010 7:20 pm That sounds like reasonable advice. I'll get some quotes on new laminate doors. What do people do about all the other bits, though? I guess I also need to replace kickboards.. what about cupboard sides and other joins which remain in the old laminate? Re: Painting two pack? 7Sep 03, 2010 10:50 am Where are you TeeVee? if in Brisbane, go and see Tony at Kitchens Direct. He deals with flatpack kitchens, but will also be able to just sell you the fronts, along with "all the other bits" for the fillers etc. We've just installed an entire kitchen from him, and it's great. But also one of our tradies managed to chip a few doors, and he's able to replace it no problem. And cheaply. http://www.kitchensdirect.net.au/ Re: Painting two pack? 9Sep 03, 2010 9:15 pm First of all 2pack sticks to laminate quite readily you can get a good result although you'll need plenty of protection and at least few hours of drying with no people around as it is quite toxic paint. Two coats will suffice with 10% thinners. Hire and use a compressor or an airless spraygun from Kennards although the hiring rate is not cheap especially if you return it dirty will cost you more. New laminate doors will be cheaper all depends what type of finish and edging you want to have on the new doors. There are laminate and laminates around Re: Painting two pack? 10Sep 03, 2010 10:27 pm Thanks so much for your help, everyone. I think the right solution for us (given that we just want a cheap 'refresh') is new laminate doors. (Poidda - I'm in SA, but thankyou anyway! I think I have a few ideas where I can get reasonable prices here...) I'm still unsure what happens, though, with the joints inbetween cabinet doors which are in the same laminate. I mean, I'm sure I can purchase new kickboards easily... but ABOVE the cabinet doors (between the top of the cabinet door and the ceiling) runs a piece of cabinet in the same laminate... there are also cabinet sides which have an exposed edge in between some of the double cabinets. I'm wondering how I update those exposed edges in the new laminate? But no matter - I'm sure some local cabinet makers will have advice on what to do. Thanks again! Well yes they're called side panels and fillers Re: Painting two pack? 12Sep 15, 2010 9:58 am Hi TeeVee, I'm refreshing my kitchen too. Our kitchen is solid timber, and it is very good but a little dark and ugly. We've just had a new pantry made in vinyl wrap and it's fabulous. I'm going to get the same cabinet maker to make us some new doors in vinyl wrap. We were first quoted two-pack finish but it was pretty expensive. Vinyl wrap is really glossy and personally I think it looks better than laminate for about the same price. I never like the edges in laminate, they look cheap. I've also had a pot of gloss enamel paint made up in the same colour and I'm going to paint all the other bits (fillers, trims, inside of cupboards, kickboards, etc) myself. I'll try to post some pics later today of before and after (if my 2.5 year old lets me!). Re: Painting two pack? 13Sep 15, 2010 9:10 pm Hi Beckandbubs! I'm hearing you re: the edges of laminate cupboards - they're just not great, are they. The thing is, though, the house we're in isn't our "dream home", it's just a 'nice little place that will do for now' if you know what I mean If we spent a lot on the kitchen here, we'd be easily over capitalising. I've actually decided that the most likely re-fresh for our kitchen will be a re-paint in White Knight Laminate Paint (our existing cainets are laminate, and they're in OK condition and they'll look just fine painted). Some members here have shared a little advice and photos of their own attempts to do the same. If I can achieve similar results I'll be rapt. It seems a reasonably hard-wearing not to mention CHEAP way to update the colour of my kitchen (which, let's face it, is all we need right now...). We plan to find our dream home over the next 5 - 6 years... and when we do, I think it'll be vinyl wrap cupboards all the way in a beautifully customised kitchen. We're actually in Adelaide, too, so if your cabinet maker is fab I would love to hear who they are! That way we can keep them in mind for when we find THAT house P.S. Still would LOVE to see your pictures... I NEVER get tired of looking at reno pictures!! Re: Painting two pack? 14Sep 15, 2010 9:22 pm I've just started a new thread: http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=38471 There are a couple of pics of our pantry and one of the kitchen as it was when we first moved in. I'll PM you the details of my cabinet maker. I've actually used him twice now, he made our kitchen in our last house and we were so pleased that we have recommended him to a few friends.
