Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 13, 2010 10:49 am Hi all, We are just starting our build, and have signed up with our builder and are about to get our final plans back and go to colour selection. I had always wanted stone benchtops but now I'm not sure. The quote we got from our builder was for 20 mm reconstituted stone and was $3500 upgrade. I hadn't even thought to get a quote on different thicknesses. 20 mm seems quite thin when I look at a ruler....I had a look through the show me your kitchen thread and most seem to be thicker. My question, how thick is recommended? Any advice? Not sure how much extra it would be to go thicker...?? Thanks! Some stone comes in both 20 and 30 depths which some people prefer. Others have chosen to increase it to 40 and up. Me personally I have 80 on the main benchtops with a raised servery of 40 - but this was because I got the stone at clearance prices and therefore price wasn't a factor. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: How thick for reconstituted stone benchtops? 3Aug 13, 2010 12:06 pm You can have the edge as thick as you like mainly because it is a manufactured edge. If you had 80mm thick stone over your bench it would crush it with its weight so the stone is either 20mm or 30mm thick and then an edge applied to it. The edge can be a butt joint where you can see but the slightest of a join mark mainly because the glues are the same colour as the resins of the engineered stone, or you can have a mitred joint where the join is virtually unnoticeable. cheers Re: How thick for reconstituted stone benchtops? 4Aug 13, 2010 10:45 pm Personally I love 20mm, it looks nice and light and modern. 40mm does cost more but not alot. comes down to personal preference and the look you are after at the end of the day. Will definitely look into the ones with the thicker edges. I think I need to see some 20 mm benches too so I can know what they both look like. Re: How thick for reconstituted stone benchtops? 10Aug 26, 2010 10:37 am Wow Moogles, I have to admit I didn't like that stone from the sample, but by having everything else white and letting the stone stand on it's own and be the star, looks absolutely stunning. Well done. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: How thick for reconstituted stone benchtops? 11Aug 26, 2010 11:24 am It's definately a matter of taste. We got 40mm on our kitchen and 80mm on the bathroom vanities but I do not recall it costing that much more as another poster says, it is just the edge, the whole slab is not 40mm thick. Re: How thick for reconstituted stone benchtops? 12Aug 26, 2010 1:40 pm joles Wow Moogles, I have to admit I didn't like that stone from the sample, but by having everything else white and letting the stone stand on it's own and be the star, looks absolutely stunning. Well done. Haha, yes I must admit - I wasn't too sure how it was going to look, but given we have white everywhere else for our stone tops wanted to do something a wee bit different, and figured if it look horrendous at least it was only in the laundry and powder rooms, - turned out fine and I am happy with it!!! Yes absolutely personal taste - but I know the trend at present does seem to be 40mm on the front/island, and 20mm on the rear bench.... or is the other way round.....?!!
