Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jul 14, 2010 7:43 pm Hi, wondering if anyone can advise me on putting a freestanding cooker in our kitchen as just that ... freestanding. I am looking to purchase a Bosch HSB745256A 90cm cooker but wondering if all the pictures I can find are of cookers with benches either side. Do the sides of the oven heat up any more than the door does? I imagine it will be easier to clean spills from the sides...Thinking of putting a mobile bench on one side to stop the kids bumping pots off the top, or touching the sides, if they heat up. Re: Advice on freestanding cookers 2Jul 14, 2010 9:37 pm I think what you have planned sounds good, altho not sure if sides heat up, but would be better without it wedged between 2 benches as far as cleaning goes. I remember a house i lived in years ago had this & was really disgusting when we pulled out oven/stove to clean when we first got there, food stuffs from god knows when.....eeeek Cooper's Build - Perth NOR viewtopic.php?f=31&t=30525 Prelim- mid Sept 2009, Pre Start 2 Feb, Siteworks- 21 April 2010, Slab- 10 May, Deliveries- all by 26 May Bricking- 28 May - 26 June, Roof complete 5 Aug, Float 28 Aug, Lock up 16 Sept Cabinets 1 Oct, Tiling 22 Oct, PCI 18 Nov, KEYS 3 Dec 2010 MOVED IN 17 DEC 2010 Re: Advice on freestanding cookers 3Jul 15, 2010 10:07 pm Thanks, I agree ... I hate thinking what's down the sides! But I'm a bit worried about the safety aspect, especially with kids. Apparently the door doesn't heat up, but I'm not sure about the sides. Can anyone advise? Re: Advice on freestanding cookers 4Aug 28, 2010 2:10 pm I know this is a late reply. I previously had a freestanding with the benches down the sides. Was good. Cant say about the heat on the sides though. In my next house though, I'm going to have 2 wall ovens. I'm not sure of the size your getting but generally they are large. With the cost of electricty on the rise, they cost a heap to run. All depends though if you love to cook. I cook/bake all the time. So for the times I want to bake just a cake, a large oven is too costly to heat up and run. For the times (like Christmas) where I have a huge cook up, the two ovens will be able to handle all the cooking. After all that, if you only like to turn your oven on here and there, then go for the freestanding as they look fabulous. THey make a great statement. When it came to the kids (6, 3 and 6 months) I've taught them to not come in the kitchen when I'm cooking. When they start to walk I teach them "danger" and "hot" in the kitchen and usher them out. Has worked great great. Its surprising how quick they pick it up. Good luck. Bathroom renovation will likely include a back-to-corner bath and we’re considering a freestanding tap with hand-held shower such as the picture included.
