Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jun 28, 2010 10:50 pm What is the best fridge/freezer on the market for a large family? I'm looking up appliances for the kitchen in the new house and would like to sort out the fridge so we can decide whether or not we will need to go with single fridge & freezer (and therefore needing a larger recess for it)... of course they don't look at nice and i've not seen a full size standalone fridge or freezer with water/ice compartment either. Thanks in advance for your opinions. Re: Best Fridge for large family? 2Jun 28, 2010 11:15 pm I did the same hunt. I was not able to find a pigeon pair that had the water and ice dispenser either. If you have the space I'd go for pigeon pair instead of water and ice dispenser. I did find http://www.cheapbargains.com.au/Samsung ... medium=cpc which fit the standard fridge space and our family is not large enough to need soemthing bigger than this. I will also be keeping our old fridge in the garage as well though until it finally dies and then I will get frost free freezer for the garage. Re: Best Fridge for large family? 3Jun 29, 2010 9:33 am I bought the biggest one I could. Freezer on top because when the freezer is on the bottom they sacrifice the size of some of the fridge space. Re: Best Fridge for large family? 4Jun 29, 2010 1:21 pm Sharp french door fridges are great. Very usable space (nice and wide if needed) and a good size freezer compartment that is organised in draws so you dont have to rummage around to get at stuff. We have the 602 litre model and they do have a bigger one. We have a family of 5 and it fits the bill perfectly. If you need lots of space in the fridge, be aware that the ice and water dispenser take up a lot of space inside the freezer. We looked at them and couldn't justify the lost space. A friend who has one was telling my wife that she wishes she didn't. It takes up space and the kids just make a mess with the water all the time. I would never go for a pigeon pair or a side-by-side fridge/freezer, because they're all way too narrow. The overall space in litres is fine, but useless if you can't get large items in there and you need to. Christmas and parties at our house would be a total nightmare with those narrow spaces. Platters, large cakes, big joints of meat, all need plenty of room. We also freeze a lot of meals - since we both work, and get home quite late most days, we need to have casseroles and other meals ready-made, so we cook and freeze batches of food most weekends. Freezer space is important to us.... At the moment we're making do with our 10 year old standard fridge-freezer, because it works fine and we can't justify the expense of upgrading. But we have 512L of space in that, plus a 300L upright freezer in the garage, and a matching 300L fridge (which is generally the home brewer's beer fridge to keep his kegs cold, but doubles as extra space for parties too). When the kitchen fridge dies, we'll be getting a French door fridge/freezer, something like chippy has. Wider than our current one and full width fridge and freezer - just what we need. I'll be voting against the water/ice maker in favour of more space, but I think I'm going to have a battle over that. Re: Best Fridge for large family? 6Jun 30, 2010 6:20 pm Thank you everyone. That Sharp french door one looks really good. I have to wrap my head around all the doors though, lol. Right now we have a F&P fridge/freezer w/ freezer on bottom and a large standalone freezer in the garage and both are full (and my 3 kids are all under 4, so I imagine I'm going to need a lot more). Might have to make the pantry bigger to fit a spare fridge/freezer in it and keep the other freezer in the garage. consider putting in wall WC instead of robe in the same bedroom, then it might be doable to hook up to the existing piping. 4 6612 4 4444 Hi all, My first post, we are building a house and can’t decide the layout of the lounge room.
