Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jun 23, 2010 10:10 pm Please help, our kitchen splash back was installed not the way we want it, and now the builder hesitated to replace it. we had this kitchen glass splash back installed about 3.7m wide Before the builder installed it, we requested verbally to SS not to have the joint near the stove, SS said no issue with that. In fact, now builder installed it just on the edge of the stove. (which consist of three section, one long section on the left hand side of the stove, then small section for the stove, and another long section on the right hand side of the stove) now it left us with a choice to accept it or to dispute it. when i spoke to SS, SS said, this is according australian building standard. However, to our frustation, on the first place, we don't want to have the splashback near the stove. now builder is very hesitated to replace it. Can anyone recommend what we can do ? What's the longest /maximum glass splashback can go ? is it possible to have full glass 3.7m wide? much appreciated for the feedback. thanks guys Final stage Re: Kitchen glass splashback: help! where do you have the jo 2Jun 23, 2010 11:02 pm the max size of the glass is about 5100mm then for the toughening process about 4000mm is a reasonably common furnace size.Although the smaller the producer the smaller the oven and then there is the paint booth size which will limit what they can do. From your description of "to aust standards and a joint either side of hotplate"it sounds like only the piece behind the hotplate is toughened and the others are ordinary float glass This would be the cheapest way Another factor that needs to be considered is the shape of the splashback, some will distort when toughened Re: Kitchen glass splashback: help! where do you have the jo 3Jun 23, 2010 11:18 pm thanks for the response mac64... so from what you are saying, is it common to have smaller piece behind the stove, just because it's toughened glass ? is there anyway that customer can have a nice shape of glass splashback without any joint up to 4000mm ? Final stage Re: Kitchen glass splashback: help! where do you have the jo 4Jun 23, 2010 11:44 pm actually i would say it's quite uncommon for just the piece behind hotplate just cheaper There reasons may not be the only cost of the glass but could be transport(most likely only have utes) or labour(one man could handle smaller pieces on his own) Re: Kitchen glass splashback: help! where do you have the jo 5Jun 25, 2010 11:37 am Our splachback was 3770 mm long the longest piece we could get was 3700 it was balanced out with 2 joins, 35mm each end. Re: Kitchen glass splashback: help! where do you have the jo 6Jun 25, 2010 12:00 pm Most installer wouldn't do glass bigger than 3m. It can be very risky. In the above example i would expect to have 2 pieces however some builders prefer to just have three because it can look more uniform. When i design my kitchen I put in a wall oven on one side to reduce the length to just under three meters to prevent this. Some builders also do this so they only have the piece behind the stove that is toughened. Re: Kitchen glass splashback: help! where do you have the jo 7Jun 25, 2010 12:38 pm Also is the the shape perfectly rectangular? Or does the piece behind the cooktop go higher then the others. The rental we had prior to building had 3 sections of splash. Two were lower to go under the overhead cupboards and were not toughened glass. The portion behind the cooktop went about 15cm higher as the rangehood sat up higher then the bottom edge of the cupboard - not flush. This section was toughened. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Kitchen glass splashback: help! where do you have the jo 8Jul 01, 2010 11:28 pm hmmm we ended up by living it, due to aesthetic purpose... i guess it looks a bit odd when you have rangehood in the middle....and you have the join not inline with the rangehood. i have no choice, unless i can find a company who make glass with full 1 glass (i am hoping the technology will allow it soon, therefore i can replace it) again, my builder is helpless... they can't do anything. the only thing where i went wrong, is to ask splashback through builder ! i should have asked different company to do it !, probably i will be satisfied with better solution, with cheaper price. Final stage To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 9799 Hi all I need a guidance on how far I need to space expansion joints in the concrete driveway and its type (keyway/foam.)
