Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Oct 17, 2007 11:00 pm Time to start costing and replacing my downstairs kitchen.
I've made many designs, may have a few more yet, but I think this one just needs a bit of tweaking before I do a final costing and purchase. Any feedback - good or bad is welcome. Looking at the pics - here is the planned layout. First up - there is an overall plan of the lower section - the large windows near the sink face due west, all this area is an open plan with a lounge/music etc to the left, with 2 x west facing sliding doors open onto a very large verandah that is 7 metres deep and the full width of the house. That funny thing there is a combustion heater which may go yet. I do not have plans for a formal dining area - space workflow etc reasons - so the island bench is a planned breakfast bar, share enjoy area, or go outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. Long term plan is to make part of the verandah an outdoor all weather eating area. I'm pretty happy with this layout and I have ripped out the existing kitchen and used it in pretty much this layout which works - except the stove is currently jammed top right hand corner to the right of the sink. The door to the bottom right of the plan layout is to the laundry - bad design but due to structural walls and protecting the kitchen from hot summer sun, its staying that way, plus there is a panty to the right of that laundry door hence the cupboards and fridge are over that side as well as to keep them away from the summer sun. Any suggestions? http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff311/sunkosi/65e354e6.jpg Plan view - north is to the right - west straight ahead over looking the verandah. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff311/sunkosi/SNAG-0003.jpg this is still looking west but from the entry level which is 4 feet above the kitchen. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff311/sunkosi/SNAG-0004.jpg This image is looking North East - the blue open areea are not windows - but an open section with posts, and also the doorway to this area via the new next to be built landing and stairway. This pic is the semi demolished kitchen and shows the high ceiliings which are 2.7m rising to 3.8meters above floor level on the RHS. The laundry door is straight ahead. http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff311/sunkosi/b05fe973.jpg Any things that stand out as - I would or wouldn't do that. Other than the mess Final wil be polished pine floors and the beams are remaining exposed - any colour suggestions are also welcome - Not that I'm undesigning But I do respect that others have better colour matching skills than myself. Cheers Steve ps the 3d tool I've used is quick and easy to use but not highly accurate - ie why the hell wont that cupboard sit on the floor - just can't make it happen And for those in the know - I intend to buy Australian made. Re: Anyone with Kitchen Suggestions 2Oct 18, 2007 9:34 am A fine layout for the available space.
Have you planned a wall oven microwave combination in one of those tall units? I would be putting it in the cabinet closest to the door so you don't have to walk around the island to get to the microwave. I like the high wall units - are you going for glazed lift up doors? Cheers, Earl Re: Anyone with Kitchen Suggestions 3Oct 18, 2007 11:28 am re the oven - not sure where to put that - Not where it is thats for sure !!!
Was thinking of the oven under the stove (to keep the heat away from the fridge and food storage areas) (or i might put it under the island bench). The microwave at present is near the fridge - which seems to work OK and may stay there - or go under the island as well- as the workflow where it is is not ideal - but I do not use it much - other than for reheating something. To the left of the fridge will be a walk in pantry of 2.5 metres by 1 metre with cool under floor air flowing through it. I'm trying to keep the benche space around the walls all available if possible for prep and entertaining reasons, (with servery window over the sink) I'm a fresh foods cook so fresh ingredients only and tend to go from fridge to island bench, prep there, to the sink and then cook, serve etc. So making that a continous flow in an anticlokcwise direction is the plan - as well as enable 2 people to cook together and still be involved in converstations etc with friends. And eventually (once I sort out the legal issues with a certain Melbourne builder about owning the name) eat out in the Alfresco area First the Grand Prix - now Alfresco And yes - lift up doors on the overhead cupboards. - Still not convinced on how many overheads as yet. Steve Re: Anyone with Kitchen Suggestions 4Oct 25, 2007 12:47 am I'm bumping this one up as I need to get the sparky in to re-locate some power points etc before I build the cupboards - so anyone with any other suggestions / ideas - I'd appreciate your thoughts.
Cheers Steve Re: Anyone with Kitchen Suggestions 5Oct 25, 2007 9:54 pm Hi Steve,
Is there enough room under the breakfast bar for people to put their legs? It looks like the cupboards come out to the edge. Just thinking of comfort, if you're intending to use it a lot for eating at. Otherwise it looks great. And call me weird, but I like laundries near kitchens! Yes there will be. The images here are not the final cupboard designs, more a mock (from some free software) that gives a feel of how much size and space there will be. Cheers for the feedback. Sure - so long as you can hold a paintbrush and roller And bring your furry 4 legged mates - the grass is looking a bit long at present and I've just changed my kitchen design - Think I'l go for the sink on the end wall, then bench space under the window - then the stove. Ohh yeah and a nose ring and hay net to keep your furry mates happy to outside the window. LOL. Thanks Mish. Your post was really helpful.
