Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 01, 2010 9:02 pm So I have seen a few threads about builders not providing enough information about how to give enough thought to your kitchen cabinets and layouts. It got me thinking about how I help people with their layouts when we plan new kitchens and I thought I would try and offer a List that you could use when deciding and planning on layout aswell as colours. Kitchen Layout Whats your layout? There are 5 main layouts. Island Layout Galley L shaped U shaped Straight (1 line on the same side) Essential thoughts There are 5 essential fittings to be considered. This is what is known as the work triangle. Placement of sink (with reference to the plumbing) Refrigerator Oven / Hot Plate Ideally these should form a work triangle with sink along one wall and fridge and hot plate in the 2 corners opposite. This is not hard and fast. Generally everyone works in their kitchen differently and what might suit 1 person maybe different for another. I generally keep around 1 meter between any of these spaces as a guide. The other 2 Overhead cabinets Pantry or Walk in. The list below is what you need to accomodate in your kitchen. Write down next to each item how much space you have allocated for these items now, then consider which cabinets these items will be going in when you have your new kitchen. Now for the list. -Food -Plates, bowls etc(china) -Cutlery(small drwer area) -Glasses -Cups -Pots and pans -Tupperware -Platters -Cookware appliances(food processors and larger items) -Bin -Tea towels -Cleaning(high or low) -Pet food -Tea and Coffee -Toaster -Microwave(cabinet or bench) -Cookbooks If your lucky you may have more space in your new kitchen so seperate even further. Now you should also have written down somewhere for reference the width, height and depth of your appliances and also consider which way these appliances open. How to implement Photocopy your kitchen layout and cabinets and use little labels on each area and write down for your builder what you would like. Drawers here, cabinets there and which way they open and what they open on to. This will hopefully help in the future and others may have some thoughts if I have missed anything. Re: **Kitchen design layout and the list to help** 2Jan 01, 2010 9:12 pm Can I just add that the cabinet maker you employ will also give you suggestions as to the layout that they think will best work for your kitchen - dont be so quick to dismiss it based on what you think is ideal and consider incorporating their ideas in to your plan, they are experts afterall and dont "win" anything by giving you the advice that they have learnt through their many years of operating Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Sorry I was writing it with a little more bias to those who build with project homes. But I didn't consider it will also be beneficial to those renovating or owner building. It also talks about where to put things in your kitchen. http://www.dynamicspace.com/dynamicspace/en/04/01/02/index.html I think I am almost definately going to use there ideas when it comes to putting things in to my new kitchen, alot of what they say tends to just be common sense.
