Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jun 06, 2010 7:05 pm hi I'm in the process of designing the kitchen. The floorplan of the house can be found here: I've drawn this up in google sketchup. My questions are: 1. do you think there are too many overhead cupboards? 2. are 3 pull-out drawers impractical in the real world? 3. i've drawn the shelving in the butler pantry as 350mm apart, do you think this is enough distance between the shelves? 4. I've drawn the banks of overhead cupboards as 600mm tall, is that a normal size for an overhead cupboard? 5. the width of the pull-out drawers are drawn as 900mm wide 6. the kickback is 140mm tall. (is this standard?) 7. the top of the bench sits at 900mm from the floor (is this standard?) 8. the overhead cupboards start at 600mm from the kitchen bench surface. 9. I'm yet to decide about the microwave. But the dishwasher will go in the island bench near the two sinks. Re: kitchen design advice 2Jun 06, 2010 8:22 pm IMO lots of overhead cupboards make me feel claustrophobic...but I am only 1.5m tall. Try asking for losonogo's opinion on this thread. viewtopic.php?f=16&t=26892 RF Build: viewtopic.php?f=38&t=34534 Flooring: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=39733 Chat: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=53303 Re: kitchen design advice 3Jun 06, 2010 8:49 pm danrts I've drawn this up in google sketchup. My questions are: 1. do you think there are too many overhead cupboards? Personally I don't have any overhead cabinets but I wanted my bench to be the main focus (it is 4m long with 80mm c'stone). Depends whether you need the storage - you will always use what you have IMO 2. are 3 pull-out drawers impractical in the real world? All my drawer banks are also 3 (other then my cutlery drawers which are 4) - I personally think they are great, deep enough for tupperware / crockery etc 3. i've drawn the shelving in the butler pantry as 350mm apart, do you think this is enough distance between the shelves? My pantry is 5.5m long by 2m wide - I only have shelves along the longest wall. The top two are 35cm apart whilst the bottom two are 45cm apart to allow for my microwave and large appliances to fit 4. I've drawn the banks of overhead cupboards as 600mm tall, is that a normal size for an overhead cupboard? Can't help as don't have any 5. the width of the pull-out drawers are drawn as 900mm wideThis is very wide. My largest are 750 and it is fine. Don't forget to store most items you will need to box in the sides 6. the kickback is 140mm tall. (is this standard?)Not sure 7. the top of the bench sits at 900mm from the floor (is this standard?)Think from memory the top of the counters is at 1200mm? but could be wrong 8. the overhead cupboards start at 600mm from the kitchen bench surface. Not sure 9. I'm yet to decide about the microwave. But the dishwasher will go in the island bench near the two sinks. My microwave is in pantry (remember to install exhaust fan if you do same) whilst dishwasher is under island bench / sinks Some things are worth waiting for. Re: kitchen design advice 4Jun 06, 2010 8:55 pm kyton 9. I'm yet to decide about the microwave. But the dishwasher will go in the island bench near the two sinks. My microwave is in pantry (remember to install exhaust fan if you do same) whilst dishwasher is under island bench / sinks Kyton, I am planning on putting our microwave in our pantry - when you say to install an exhaust fan what exactly do you mean? Like a fan you would put in the ceiling of a toilet or bathroom?? Or a fan behind where the microwave will go? And, what exactly do you need an exhaust fan for? We've got a meeting on site with the electrician on Wednesday so I'd like to let him know then if we need one. Re: kitchen design advice 5Jun 06, 2010 9:02 pm Dilla - yep just an ordinary exhaust fan. Great for getting rid of any cooking smells that linger from using the microwave. We have two fluoro lights in our pantry due to the length and we placed the fan in between them. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: kitchen design advice 7Jun 06, 2010 11:41 pm My answers are in green:) 1. do you think there are too many overhead cupboards? no, however there are alternative designs available 2. are 3 pull-out drawers impractical in the real world? no, they are awesome!! 3. i've drawn the shelving in the butler pantry as 350mm apart, do you think this is enough distance between the shelves? no, to make sure measure the height of you tallest cereal box. It is also worth looking at a proper shelving system like elna as these are adjustable and will cater for lifestyle changes 4. I've drawn the banks of overhead cupboards as 600mm tall, is that a normal size for an overhead cupboard? yes, so is 720 and 800. It depends alot of the time on your preferences and height for ease of access, storage needs or purely design 5. the width of the pull-out drawers are drawn as 900mm wide perfectly fine, bigger the better:) wouldnt go any wider though, bases of drawer will be prone to sagging 6. the kickback is 140mm tall. (is this standard?) Yep and so is 145. It all depends on the actually cupboard height 7. the top of the bench sits at 900mm from the floor (is this standard?) yes, you may also have it shorter or taller depending on your height and benchtop thickness 8. the overhead cupboards start at 600mm from the kitchen bench surface. Yes generally they do, however, 700 or 800 isnt uncommon due to head space 9. I'm yet to decide about the microwave. But the dishwasher will go in the island bench near the two sinks. I would put the microwave under the island bench also to hide it and also keep it at convenience arms reach:) I have started to drawer up my design for that space. I will post tomorrow as i need a lil sleep atm lol Regards Losonogo If you need a kitchen drawn up, post it on this thread - gotta give me a couple of days though:) viewtopic.php?f=16&t=26892 Re: kitchen design advice 8Jun 07, 2010 7:06 am thanks for the tips! I can email you my sketchup file if that helps. I think the builder said my kitchen is a little wider as apparently you need 900mm walking distance around a benchtop, but I just drew it as per my original concept plan as 4500 wide. Re: kitchen design advice 9Jun 07, 2010 12:52 pm If you are in Victoria and have a gas cooktop, your exhaust needs to be 700mm above the cooktop to be compliant. You can drop your overheads to 600mm if you like but you may wish to keep them level with the exhaust. Personally, I think you have too many overheads and such a big line of them may be a bit overpowering on the space. I modified my design to include a wine fridge or bar fridge in the butler pantry. I like your idea of the thinner top drawers along the kitchen bench rather than a stack of 4. i also like your idea of the large pull out drawers in butler pantry and the cupboards in the island bench. I've put the sinks in the island a bit further away from the edge for washing up purposes.
