Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: Confused about kitchen bulkhead - which one is it? 8Jun 04, 2010 11:58 pm option 1 is the bulhead, we have just ordered new kitchen to go in our existing home with very high ceiling, so will have a bulkhead so its all boxed in and the top cupboards dont have dust collecting them! Re: Confused about kitchen bulkhead - which one is it? 9Jun 05, 2010 7:05 am Thanks everyone! Southies Your bulkheads have been finished differently to ours, but the end result will be the same. Hmmm, I wonder why. High ceilings perhaps??? This is what has thrown DH. As soon as he saw it, he said straight away that it's been done differently to what he thought it should have been done like. So that's why we thought perhaps we haven't used the correct terminology when requesting what we wanted. DH was quite certain that it was called a bulkhead to get cabinets like option 1. Thanks so much everyone!! And I'll definitely post pics once it's all completed Re: Confused about kitchen bulkhead - which one is it? 10Jun 05, 2010 12:34 pm The cabinets in both photos have bulkheads - the second one just has a deeper bulkhead, which makes the cabinet recessed and leaves room for the downlight. They can be either plasterboard, in which case they're done before the cabinets go in, or MDF or similar, in which case they're done after the cabinets go in. The recessed ones are usually plaster, but as to which one you're getting, it will depend on the depth. Measure it and then check how deep your cabinets are supposed to be. Your drawings ought to show which yours will be.... We have both. Overheads, with MDF bulkhead (same as Southies'): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Appliance cupboard, with plasterboard bulkhead (recessed so there's enough bench space to use the appliances): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I forgot about a downlight, dammit! We need to get one installed; it's a bit dark when I'm using my appliances. Re: Confused about kitchen bulkhead - which one is it? 12Jun 07, 2010 8:52 pm None of us can tell you what your kitchen bulkhead will look like because we don’t know the depth of your overhead cupboards! If they are the same depth as the bulkhead then you will have option 1 and if the bulkhead is deeper, you will have option 2. From your photo I think the bulkhead looks deeper than the depth of standard overhead cupboards so I personally believe you are looking at option 2. I actually think that in your case the bulkhead is meant to be as deep as the counter and the overhead cupboards are usually only half as deep as the counter. Look at your ‘internals’ working drawings to confirm the dimensions and you’ll have your answer. PS. It’s not hard to retrofit down lights in the bulkhead if that’s what you want. You would probably get it done cheaper through a private contractor after handover than through the builder! Re: Confused about kitchen bulkhead - which one is it? 13Jun 08, 2010 1:01 am Hey Mickey is right on the ball, i just drew up the kitchen wall on sketch up 'photo match' and the depth of the bulkheads are 600 - the same as you bench Heres a drawing to explain Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thus you will get lights mounted on the underside, nice! Re: Confused about kitchen bulkhead - which one is it? 15Jun 08, 2010 8:27 pm Thanks so much for going to the effort of doing that Losonogo Yep much more clearer now. I just showed DH and he's like: "that's what I've been trying to tell you". Ha, ha I need visuals though to understand I actually think we paid for an upgrade when we didn't need to and that MDF bulkheads are standard with our builder!! I just checked our paperwork and all it says is "bulkhead to overhead cupboards" and it was $180. These are our internal drawings so they don't tell me anything! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'm just hoping it doesn't look too modern cos I got a frenchy sort of kitchen with routed edge cupboards and all my furnishings are classic and not modern. I knew there would be something that wouldn't go smoothly Re: Confused about kitchen bulkhead - which one is it? 16Jun 09, 2010 11:35 pm to keep with the period or frenchy theme, choose knobs instead of handles (unless they are old looking) New s/steel handles wont suit. I found some antique brass ones in a garage sale and gave them to a client i designed the kitchen for. It matched perfectly. Turned out the handles for over 100 years old and worth a bit of dough lol. Glad the client was happy:) If you need a kitchen drawn up, post it on this thread - gotta give me a couple of days though:) viewtopic.php?f=16&t=26892 If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8342 Bigger the better for storage for me IMO.
