Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 May 06, 2010 4:06 pm Please help!! We're building with redink homes in Perth... I want to upgrade kitchen up to my standard ...including stone benchtop, pull-out pantry, over head cupboards, tiles or glass splash back, lots of drawers, diamond gloss cup-boards etc etc. seems like a MASSIVE upgrade involved. so far only got a rough quote for bench tops just to get stone benchtop they quoted us 7-8000 dollars.....god I think it's a lot! that's why i've been thinking of getting them to credit us with kitchen cost (Dont know how much they'll give back yet) and get the whole kitchen done ourselves through a cabinet maker... anybody done this before? any advice? how much the cost differences will be..... please help:( thanks heaps!! Re: Get our own kitchen or upgrade through a builder???? 2May 06, 2010 4:45 pm It's always a vexed issue. First, have you asked if they will let you do that. Some builders are reluctant to hand over the house without doing the kitchen. Secondly, they will only credit you for what the kitchen costs. Now that sounds fair but what people dont realise is that they are still keeping approximately 20% on top of that that (or whatever their margin is). You see when they give you a price for the entire house this price includes their margin so in effect they are going to keep the profit (margin) regardless of whether you get them to do some work or remove it. So what you need to work out is if upgrading is really worth the overall cost. They ordered what ever was stock standard from the builder and came to hubby for another one to replace it. So the day they get their keys is the day hubby is going in to pull the old one out, and put in the new one Worked out cheaper for them to do it that way. You need to work out whether its worth the hassle though - if its just upgrading to stone, than it may not be worth it. If you want a completely different design, custom items, etc than it may be worth going seperately Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Re: Get our own kitchen or upgrade through a builder???? 5May 06, 2010 7:04 pm Why dont you just spend the builders budget on the cupboards and do the stone and splashback at the end your self. $7-8000 seems pricey for stone unless u have a huge kitchen. Re: Get our own kitchen or upgrade through a builder???? 7May 06, 2010 11:01 pm The price for the stone sounds about right. our kitchen is med-small and the stone is just under $6k, but that is for a premium colour, would have been $5k for standard colour. We have waterfall on one end that was extra $900 approx. sorry can't help with the advice.. but out house is less than `ten years old and we are ripping it out for a new one. I still want overhead cupboards, pull out pantries, nicer handles, glass splash back, island rangehood etc etc.... then think about how much they'll charge?????????? we're going towards to getting Ikea kitchen..any thoughts on that? Re: Get our own kitchen or upgrade through a builder???? 9May 07, 2010 7:48 am Hi Saemiseon We are installing our Ikea kitchen in the next few weeks so will post pics for you WE were really happy with the design and cost especially the caesar stone Our kitchen is 4m x 3 m we are having 40 mm for all kitchen which covers a(bout 4metres of bench space plus another 220cm x 90cm for our island) Including all joins and cutouts for dbl sink and the installation cost the stone was $3400 The cabinets are all soft close drawers we have one pantry one microwave cupboard but no overheads - this was just over $6k. MASSIVE RIP OFF AND YOU WILL NEVER GET WHAT YOU TRULY WANT! Storng feelings there Nemisis! But I disagree-I am getting the kitchen I want through our builder and have moved cupboards, walls and extended the benchtop (including adding another cupboard) and it has only cost me another $400! This includes Quantum Quartz benchtops & glass splashback (which are standard inclusions with our builder.) Kitchens seem to be a big ticket item in the builder budget and I would suggest that you do your own kitchen, if they will let you. We built through Redink too and wanted exactly the same thing - but we were looking at an extra $5500 just for the stone What we decided to do was cut out the bits we didn't need (like overhead cupboards) to reduce the cost, get the stock standard included with the house put in, and renovate to my hearts content a few years down the line when we're 100% confident about colours, bench locations and what I want from my kitchen Re: Get our own kitchen or upgrade through a builder???? 15May 07, 2010 6:59 pm @ samesion. Just so you know. I pretty sure candicenokacs kitchen cost more than you thought. It was $3400 just for the caesar stone top. Ikea cupboards still aren't that cheap. Why don't you put in basic kitchen (maybe even downgrade to square laminate bench) but get the door and draws you want. Just get one tile over the top of bench. Then when you get hand over, change the bench top, get your over heads and glass splashback. I know it sounds wasteful but may still work out cheaper than upgrading through Redink. Take your plans to some stone masons and a cabinet maker and get a quote, then you'll know if it is worth it.
