Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 31, 2010 10:45 am Hey Guys, I have joined up today as wifey and i are looking for some advice for our new kitchen. We are in the process of building a new home....or finalising plans actually, and we have the rest of the house pretty much all sorted, but the kitchen is giving us a bit of grief. We have a large "L Shaped" kitchen with an island in the middle....I have attached a copy of the "open plan" section of our house so you can see...ignore the kitchen design this... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Ok...now the problem we are having. We have opted to have all of our "to the roof" cupboards/fridge/pantry etc on the short side of the kitchen and our main benchtop/cooktop on the long side...as per the below: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Now we have made a couple of small changes since those plans were drawn, but the main thing we are concerned about is the fact that the "long side" may look too bare?? We will have a 900mm ranghood to break it up a bit, but do you think it is too bare?? We originally planned to have a full wall glass splashback similar to this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ But have since shown a couple of people...ie. Mum and Dad .....and they seem to think it will be "too much". So....what are your thoughts?? I originally thought it would give the room a great feature having that wall a complete red/green?? We will also be matching the kick area under the breakfast bar with the wall colour.... Thanks for looking and i look forward to your thoughts!! CHeers Benny J Re: Help with our kitchen.... 2Mar 31, 2010 10:51 am I like it. If you don't need the extra cupboard space, I think it will look fantastic with a full glass wall. Something different. It is a big open plan room, so I think it can handle it well. Good luck with your build Re: Help with our kitchen.... 6Mar 31, 2010 12:07 pm I love love love that full glass splashback!! And i also think your plan is fantastic like it is Best of luck with it! viewtopic.php?f=31&t=22766 - my build thread! Time waits for no man. Unless that man is Chuck Norris. Re: Help with our kitchen.... 7Mar 31, 2010 12:09 pm I'm a big fan of doing something different to what everyone else is. It's refreshing to see something that's not "same old - same old" and won't date as quickly. And what you plan to do looks really spectacular. I'd say go for it if it's feasible and you can afford it:D My only reservations are about the sheer practicality of doing it - surely a piece of glass that size couldn't be transported and installed as a single unit?? So, what sort of joins will be used and what will they look like? Worth asking all the questions now so you don't get your heart set on it and then have to abandon the idea. Cheers zeke PS Sorry to be pedantic, but shouldn't your kitchen designer know how to spell "drawer"? Re: Help with our kitchen.... 8Mar 31, 2010 12:17 pm Just twigged that your "wall of glass" will be narrower then the one shown in the photo......so my concerns about the feasibility may be totally unfounded......hope so as I think it will be a great feature. But I still wouldn't want to be anywhere near when it is installed. I had to help when 2 blokes turned up to install a 2.2 x 1.8 m mirror in our vanity and that almost ended in tears. Cheers zeke Re: Help with our kitchen.... 9Mar 31, 2010 1:36 pm Thanks everyone for your feedback!! It is much appreciated. It is pleasing to see that alot of you have the same views as me zeke Just twigged that your "wall of glass" will be narrower then the one shown in the photo......so my concerns about the feasibility may be totally unfounded......hope so as I think it will be a great feature. Thanks Zeke....and i had these worries too. My main concern is the length of the glass required (3100mm approx). Fingers crossed they come in lengths that big... Obviously cost is another worry I might actually look into other options for the "glass look"....has anyone heard or had any experience with any similar options? Cheers Benny J Re: Help with our kitchen.... 10Mar 31, 2010 6:41 pm I think your kitchen plans look awesome!! That splashback is great. Don't worry about what others think of your choice (do they have an awesome kitchen themselves?), I am sure they will love it once the build is completed. I don't know how expensive it is compared to regular glass splashbacks, but there's Prosatin. Thanks for thinking of us....but we were actually maybe looking at something like Acrylic Splashbacks...eg http://www.ozziesplash.com.au/products/ ... plash.html http://www.zenolite.com.au/FortheHome/t ... fault.aspx http://www.akril.com.au/gallery/gallery.php?cat_id=2# Obviously the only downside is the fact that you cant have it directly behind your cooktop as the heat would melt/warp it...but i see a few of them have just put a stainless steel sheet behind it... After reading some reveiws etc...this may well be the way we go.... What do you guys reckon?? Anyone have experience with this stuff?? Re: Help with our kitchen.... 13Apr 01, 2010 12:29 am g'day benny Kitchen design is great. Personally, I wouldn't have a wall that size in just one glass (or glossy material) in such a bright colour - but remember, that's me. I feel if this happened, the rest of the home would have to suit this (what appears to be) very modern feel. It would completely dominate that room and I mean living etc attached to it. Your eyes would be drawn to it all the time. If you were doing a typical splashback with overheads, that is completely different and that is a great look, without the domination to take it out of proportion with the rest of the room decor. Perhaps some kind of overheads (and I'm sure there are many modern options to consider) would really take this design to another level. Although that kitchen in the pic looks great, in your home, is a whole different thing!!! I don't know if you get what I mean... in any case, if you love it, it's totally irrelevant what people say, ultimately, you have to decide. My real concern is if you don't like it, it's not paint, you can't just paint over it. ALSO, did you say what colour cabinets??? or do you mean the ones in the pic above? This factor comes into it too, as your cabinet colours may well change the dynamic of this kind of kitchen too. Whether you go with green or red, does not really change what I'm saying here. If I were determined to do a whole wall of glossy finish, I would make it only slightly darker (or lighter) than my cabinet (or wall) colours, I would not do a huge contrast with such a large glossy wall. (remember, that's me, I'm sure many people have done it, I've just never seen it) So I'd say def go for it if you love it and it will suit the rest of the decor. Otherwise try to go see someone's home who have actually done it, because it's not a great situation if you need to change it. Good luck!!! can't wait to see pics, specially if you do it, I might completely change my mind then! A thankful person is a happy person. Your eyes would be drawn to it all the time. That would be my issue with it. I think such a large feature (and that is what it is) needs a room that has the proportions to accommodate it. Judging by the scale on your drawings, this does not look like a huge space (at a guess 7500 by 7500 or 56m2? If that is the case you may end up with something that just takes over the whole room...is more of a distraction than a feature. I like the look but caution you to think about proportion. given the money you are obviously spending, I'd be inclined to pay in the region of $250 for an interior design consultation. Re: Help with our kitchen.... 15Apr 01, 2010 8:28 am Thanks for your feedback guys!! The fact that it is "too much" is the only thing stopping us from doing it. The room size is about 9100 x 6000 so it is quite a sizable room. The wall size where the glass will be is 3100 x 1485 approx. My thoughts are that is is really no different to a feature wall except for the fact that it is going to be much brighter. At this stage we are thinking of darker cupboards (dark grey or similar) and a light/white benchtop. Stainless steel appliances etc etc.... Still no idea what to do....haha Re: Help with our kitchen.... 17Apr 01, 2010 9:33 am Benny J Thanks for your feedback guys!! The kitchen is going to be the focal point in a room that big open room anyway, so I think making a statement out of it would be fantastic (in my personal opinion). Re: Help with our kitchen.... 18Apr 01, 2010 9:38 am Go for it! Don't listen to anyone else they aren't the ones living with your kitchen. Make it unique. Use colour, be bold. Love all the space you have. Re: Help with our kitchen.... 19Apr 01, 2010 10:30 am Quote: The room size is about 9100 x 6000 so it is quite a sizable room. Why don't you try buying some paper in the approximate color of your glass and stick it up on the wall to cover the same area....see how it looks? Re: Help with our kitchen.... 20Apr 01, 2010 10:40 am I love it! I'm having a red glass splashback, Although mine wont be the full height of the ceilings like your picture ..I wouldn't mind it. Im thinking of trying to use whiteboard markers to write things.. recipies etc on there (A good idea but i don't know if it will actually work:)) It would make a talking point of your house but It's a personal preference though. You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn. The doors can’t open past 90 degrees and it’s difficult and maybe impossible to remove drawers 2 15573 of course there are legal avenues. You've already mentioned it. Sue them. I find it odd that lawyers wouldnt be willing to take on the case, given CCT evidence and… 1 23754 |
