Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 27, 2010 12:10 am Hello I am just wondering if anyone had any experience with white kitchen cupboards and young kids (say under 5) I would love to have white cupboards in my new kitchen but DH thinks they would be too hard to keep clean with the littluns and their grubby hands and kitchen spills. Would I just be asking for trouble and creating a whole lot of work for myself trying to keep them clean? Any thoughts/experience with this would be appreciated. Glossy white (glossy anything) is another kettle of fish - finger marks might drive you wild I say go for it. Re: White cupboards and young kids - a good or bad idea? 3Mar 27, 2010 12:24 am My kids are 6 and 4...we had white cupboards in our last house and we're putting them into the new house as well so I guess you could say I didn't have any dramas with keeping them clean. We had grey cupboards in our first house pre-kids and I found they never looked clean. Re: White cupboards and young kids - a good or bad idea? 4Mar 27, 2010 7:23 am we also have white cupboards and little kids. they do get dirty though i think maybe more from me then them!! i think its good when you can see the dirt. imagine how much grime could get lost on the dark/patterened ones i reckon it might be easier having the gloss ones though, just wipe off. Re: White cupboards and young kids - a good or bad idea? 5Mar 27, 2010 7:31 am I think satin white would be OK. From what I understand, gloss any colour shows up fingerprints - so would be unsuitable for kids of all ages from 1 to 101. They are so easy to keep clean, with just a quick wipe over every now and then. Husbands tend to do more 'damage' than the kids I've decided! I keep face washes in the kitchen, so if the kids have eaten and are sticky, then they wash their face/hands BEFORE moving from their chair, thus eliminating the sticky fingers problem...most of the time! I agree with Donuts, it's good to see the dirt in order to clean it off! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Get what you love, they'll get grubby no matter what age your kids are or what colour you get. Re: White cupboards and young kids - a good or bad idea? 8Mar 27, 2010 9:36 am I had burnished wood in our last house for this reason, and they drove me nuts. The finger prints were still really noticeable, and they just looked grubby. At least with white, you see a mark easy, and would be more inclined to wipe it off straight away. LMAO Re: White cupboards and young kids - a good or bad idea? 14Mar 27, 2010 7:07 pm I had white laminate cupboards in previous kitchen with a dark bench and have decided to go the opposite in the new build ie. darker cupboards and white bench top. I found with a 4 yr old and 1 yr old the marks on the coupboards were constant and drove me around the bend. I do think however that the finish of the cupboards makes a huge difference - I had a matt white finish which seemed to 'hold' the dirt/marks and made it really hard to clean - it wasn't just a simple wipe off - every mark required the spray and elbow grease!! So maybe a gloss would be easier to clean??? Go with whatever colour/look you love and then keeping the kitchen clean won't be a chore!! Mel - jumping in feet first to my first owner build!! I think the white gloss is super easy to keep clean and they seem to always come up sparkly and fresh.
