Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 26, 2010 8:32 pm Hi Just looking into a kitchen reno... Current kitchen is 17 years old (from when we built the house) and about 3.5m x 3.5m G-shape. Does anyone know what amount of space is needed around an independent island bench? There is an option to steal some space from another room to make the kitchen wider but is it worth the extra building cost? Thanks P&ML Re: Space needed around island bench 2Mar 27, 2010 7:08 am The general clearance specs I like to work to are: On the working sides where more cabinetry is behind the bench 1000mm is minimum, 1200mm is good. For walk through sides (no working) 900mm is really minimal. For seating on a breakfast bar side the room required to sit on a stool starts at 600mm from the edge of the bench top if there is going to be a walk through. Hope this helps.
