Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 02, 2007 3:57 pm Does anyone know any cheap sources of appliances?
I'm in need of a 900 cooktop and pull-out range, and 2 x 600 wall ovens. I'm in Wagga, but could possibly visit Sydney or something 'cause I have family there. Re: Best place to buy appliances 2Sep 02, 2007 6:18 pm Check out your local retailers first Parker.
They live there and I am sure thye also support your loal footy club and community. Sure if they are double the price - goto the big smoke, but first up - do a few web price reviews to savy up on what you would like - then goto your local retailers and see what they have to offer - Wagga is not the back of beyond and you have lots of options there. And if you have to pay a little extra for freight and their lower buying power it sure helps when it needs to be looked at in the future. I'm all for buying from my local suppliers to ensure they stay in business and the rest of the local economy survives. Steve Re: Best place to buy appliances 3Sep 02, 2007 7:00 pm I usually like to shop locally…..just in case!
If there is a problem with one of your purchases, then it’s back in the car and off to Sydney again to replace it! Not a nice thought! I’m sure if you shop around in Wagga you will find as good or near as, the rest of us get. Don’t forget to barter! It always helps. Check out the websites…..Westinghouse and the alike to get an idea on prices. In the past I always paid the price displayed because I thought it was embarrassing to barter but since building this time around I've learned my lesson. Some of the bigger stores are highway robbers. I went to a large store today to buy a mattress. The price was $1099. I asked what their best price was for cash ......$850. I couldn't believe the difference. I then went next door where the price was $900. Their best price was $759 - delivered. So for the minor embarrassment of asking for a discount I saved over $300. Now I am cheesed off about all the money I have donated to the big stores over the years by being too squeamish to barter!!! Re: Best place to buy appliances 5Sep 03, 2007 4:19 pm Hi all, I really try moderately hard not to be a language Nazi, but I think it is important to point our here that "Barter is a type of trade that doesn't use any medium of exchange, in which goods or services are exchanged for other goods and/or services."
Now I'm pretty sure (I could be wrong) that penjay didn't barter $300 worth of goods or services on the recent mattress purchase; it is probably more likely that this price was "haggled" which "is the process of negotiating the price of something (e.g. a piece of merchandise or a service) with the intent of getting a better deal than the stated price" I hate haggling, although bartering can have it's advantages - depends on where you stand with the ATO. A lot of appliance resellers lay on a pretty heavy markup because they know that the customer is going to hit them up for a "better price" ; so they slash off a couple of hundred and get the sale. There is no legal way these days to clear a better deal with a cash sale - once again, if you ask someone what their best price for cash is, you will just end up with the product being marked down to what they need to sell the product for while still showing a profit. This also happens a lot in the kitchen industry - a grinning salesperson will offer you a 50 percent discount (and a free dishwasher) on all cabinets if you sign up for the kitchen plan on the spot. I really wish people would think about this when it is being offered to them...like, yeah, I'm going to take a 50% hit just to move my product - which I don't even have in stock and needs to be made to order, so it's not like I am covering presale overheads or anything...the product is marked up with the intention of being sold through the power of offering a "discount". When I write a quote I state explicitly that the price listed is my best price...I don't try to win jobs by offering any sort of discount incentive. Here endeth todays rant. Cheers, Earl Re: Best place to buy appliances 6Sep 03, 2007 5:14 pm I find it interesting that the forum is absolutely riddled with poor grammar, spelling and punctuation yet you choose to single out one word in the midst of this sea of error.
I wouldn't haggle with a small business but I do object to paying an exorbitant price that has quite obviously been marked up by a multinational corporation (hence my use of the description "large stores.") I am fully aware that the price has been marked up to allow for people who ask for a better price so I would be a fool not to take advantage. IMO Re: Best place to buy appliances 7Sep 03, 2007 8:43 pm Strumer……when I was in Bali I bartered all the time, but I don’t recall giving back anything, other than money, for what I bought.
Ohhh these a scary thought, bartering my services for a nice wrap! But point taken! Perhaps not the best choice of words here. You have raised some valid issues with the pricing of goods and services. I guess its buyer beware, as we all know that we don’t get things cheap without the supplier making their cut, and some. But if a customer feels they have received a discount….then everyone is happy. I know I have been ripped off in the past, but hey, we all need to make a living, and I understand that. But if I feel I have received a good discount, I’m really happy! But if I want an even better one I’ll buy from my suppliers. Love you’re RANT….there should be more of them. Penjay…..I have been pulled up a couple of times about my spelling on the forum, I’m feeling red faced about now, and hoping I haven’t displayed my dyslexia too much? People make spelling mistakes, typos etc all the time and I certainly wasn't having a go at anyone or their spelling. I was just making the point that when someone's meaning is clear and they are getting their message across I don't believe correcting them is a useful or valuable past time. If we all indulged in correcting our pet hates, most posts would be up for scrutiny and we would waste a lot of time annoying people or making them feel inadequate. I am well aware that bartering is not the correct term, however we all knew what we meant by it. Re: Best place to buy appliances 9Sep 03, 2007 9:23 pm I understand! Helen Re: Best place to buy appliances 14Sep 04, 2007 9:01 am OK, well back to the topic of appliances
The local places consist of 2 groups. The Harvey Norman/Joyce Main style chain stores, and the little guys who charge twice the price. I don't really see a lot of benefit in supporting either, and as far as I knew, warranty etc was all handled by agents via the manufacturer/distributor of the item??? So... does anyone know any good discount warehouses or anything where they have found particularly good deals? I'm talking about the msy.com.au of the white goods world. OK Adrian B Re: Best place to buy appliances 17Sep 04, 2007 11:44 am Hi I have gotten some great bargains in the past from www.graysonline.com.au (a 60cm Chef oven for $400)
ebay of course and by paying cash and bargaining at The Good Guys Building a Jandson Espirit in Pennant Hills "What is the use of a home, if you haven't got a tolerable planet to put it on?"Henry Daniel Thereau Re: Best place to buy appliances 18Sep 05, 2007 10:24 am Thanks - some of those links are looking good. At the very least I have a good bargaining chip to use with locals. Use a product like Equisol's Vitalise to clean the deck then coat with a penetrating timber oil.
