Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Mar 13, 2010 9:09 pm Had our colour selection meeting, walked away pretty disappointed with colour selection of laminate benches / doors and think I will hate them, also their tile selection was terrible, only had a few boards already layed out to select from, in total only about 6 feature tiles, which were not in the colours i wanted, so could not put in a feature tile in bathrooms. OMG I am so disappointed, now I am not even looking forward to building getting started as I dont think I am going to like my selections. We could only select from Laminex/Formica, we wanted a chocolate brown colour and had go with burnished wood with plain white laminate for benchtops. Anyone else hate their selections from colour meeting and when you actually built were you still disappointed? Site Start: 10th September, 2010 PCI : Friday 27th January, 2011. The colour selection should be the best (if not the most stressful) part!! Is it because they didn't have much to choose from - could you upgrade anything? Also, what happened with the laminex - they have some great colours available, if you look at their website.... Re: COLOUR SELECTION DONE - I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! 5Mar 13, 2010 9:50 pm This is ludicrous!!! Most builders do have the standard builders selections but you shouldn't be made to choose in that range. Any incurred costs obviously paid by you. We liked nothing in our builders range so chose what we wanted even if it meant we paid a bit more. We are not building with a 'franchised' builder...that's what I call them anyway. Colours/textures and endless possibilities to create a unique look. And you wonder why every display home looks the same and every home built by that company has the same interior....go figure. Sometimes builders do this to ensure they know exactly what their profit margins are. I feel your disappointment. Tell the builder what you want and ensure you get it. Don't settle for something just because it is in their range. Re: COLOUR SELECTION DONE - I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! 6Mar 14, 2010 7:04 am Hi Ring I agree with all other posters...did you actually tell them you wanted more choices and not just what they had on the 6 boards? It sounds like you have gone for a package that allows you to have only the colour schemes on their boards. This is very common with innercity apartments and there is only 2 choices When we built our first home, the company tried this on us to I hated absolutely everything and told the girl that no way was I going to select anything as they are all ugly...I can be very blunt. She she told us that we can pick our own colours So from their ugly cheap nasty colour boards to pick anything you want, I wonder how many people got hoodwinked into the colourboard crap Change your slections...ring up and say you felt * and HATE everything....did you query what they were telling you? It is very difficult when you first built and we are all here for you! Did the builder only give you a few samples to choose from? If so, go to the Laminex and Formica websites, or ring them and get a brochure sent out - there are hundreds of laminates to choose from, and most of them are standard types with a standard pricetag. Re: COLOUR SELECTION DONE - I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! 8Mar 15, 2010 11:22 am Thank you for your replies. I think I will take your advice and ring this morning and complain about lack of colour choices. I am quite happy to pay for upgrade in tiles (afterall there are not that many tiles in a smallish bathroom & ensuite) and it was the feature tiles I was after. Laminate - I dont know why they do this with limiting their choices when they are all the same price - I have since found out that the Cabinet Makers who make their kitchens also do some of the big volume builders and apparently they are the biggest kitchen makers in the country - so like all volume companies they give you set guidelines and if you want to go out of them - No way - or if you do they want to charge you ridiculous prices to do - I was quoted over $4,000 for a diamond gloss benchtop - the bench is just over 2 metres island bench and same size for other bench. But I have since shown my colours to a few people on the weekend and they say it will look ok - so if I dont get any positive feedback today from the builder, I will just have to go with it and look at changing down the track after the fences, driveway, blinds, garden, etc, etc, etc, which I know will never probably happen. You could get stone for that surely. Re: COLOUR SELECTION DONE - I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! 10Mar 15, 2010 1:02 pm What a joke. Diamond Gloss is the same price as normal Laminate. If you want the edges square (to look like stone) its roughly $30 extra per linea metre. Was it $4000 extra??? over laminate??? Because if so you are being taken for a ride. Re: COLOUR SELECTION DONE - I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! 11Mar 15, 2010 2:11 pm our 40mm granite cost $5000 inc 2 waterfall ends. That is a rediculous price for laminate! Moved In!!! I'm getting a new Diamond Gloss "Roman Marble" laminate benchtop installed tomorrow into my current house, with the nice edge so it looks less like laminate and more like stone - fully installed for $1350.... similar size if not bigger... I think that $4k is a bit ridiculous! I actually think the burnished wood and plain white will look nice but, i hope they give you what you want. I really couldnt beleive the upgrade cost for that diamond gloss, that is beyond pricey. Re: COLOUR SELECTION DONE - I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! 14Mar 19, 2010 12:56 pm I couldn't tell you how many metres we had done in laminex. But we got diamond gloss Laminex in 2 bathrooms and laundry and Squareform Laminex in kitchen, we only had to pay $100 extra for the square edging like stone. Re: COLOUR SELECTION DONE - I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! 15Mar 27, 2010 3:28 pm Did you actually get to go to a tile shop to choose your laminate and tiles?? With our builder they have their builders range but we got to go to a choice of 2 tile shops and make our laminate and tile selections from there. Then at pre-start they already had those and we just chose the other things ie tap fittings etc. That said our builder wont do diamond gloss at all. Re: COLOUR SELECTION DONE - I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED!!!! 16Mar 27, 2010 7:41 pm Dont be pushed into anything that you are not keen on. Make sure you do complete research to options available. Builders will often say to choose from a small selection, cause it would be easier for them. Why would we want our houses to all look the same???? Diamond Gloss with a rolled edge is the same price as a laminate top with a rolled edge. Your builder may not like the product, but you should have the final say. It is your house.
