Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 25, 2007 10:32 am Hi all,
I have always had overhead cupboards and have found them to be... dirt and grime collectors hard to use effectively every day a place to stash more kitchen junk that we dont need or ever use not designed in a user friendly way etc, etc, My question is, do you find these cupboards useful to have or could the money be better spent on pull out or walk in pantrys. For those people who are building a new home, did you ever consider or was given the option of having a butlers pantry? The idea of having a well designed room off the kitchen to use as a storage and prep area for food is very appealing. We have a butlers pantry in our new home to be and I find it very appealing that when we entertain, all the dirty plates, pots, glasses are all hidden away and my kitchen bench is left clean and clutter free. What are every ones thoughts on... Overhead cupboards in the kitchen Butlers Pantries Mrs B Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 2Aug 25, 2007 3:51 pm Useful - but only of they go all the way up to the ceiling. In a small kitchen essential. Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 3Aug 25, 2007 4:21 pm The more storage the better in my opinion. Although the little cupboards sometimes put above rangehoods (we have them) can be a bit of a waste because of their shallowness which allows for the flu.

EImaj I love these and use them to store all my jars of herbs and spices. Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 5Aug 25, 2007 10:57 pm I'm with you Mrs B. Overhead cupboards are incredible collectors of filth and dust. Instead, several large pantry's (at least one walk-in !) are far preferable. And even then there should be no exposed top - fill in the space to the ceiling so they don't just become dust trays.
Kitchens with dozens of cupboards in all sorts of impractical and unreachable locations scream out "poor design" to me. Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 6Aug 26, 2007 7:11 am I agree cabinfever but we 'all' still have them in our kitchen. They should be at least designed in a user friendly way. We are moving out this weekend and Mr B has just cleaned out our OC and the amount of junk that came out of them and we had never used any of it in 7 years just strengthens my resolve not to have it in my new kitchen...famous last words
We have one of those long windows in our new kitchen( not sure if I made the right decision) so we dont need to fill uo a blank wall with OC. I just have to work out the rangehood. They also can be dirt collectors and dreadful to clean. Mrs B Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 7Aug 29, 2007 7:22 am All kitchen overheads should have bulkheads that go to the ceiling. This can then have cornice around it. It really looks good and gets ride of the grease problem.
Design is another matter. If done properly the overheads can be usefull and look good too. Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 8Sep 08, 2007 10:20 pm Theoretically I agree with you Mrs B, but I don't think I'd ever go without them.
Although we are getting a walk-in pantry in our new house we'll still be getting overheads in the main kitchen. With little people wandering around there are some things I just can't store in the lower cupboards, and I figure in future there will always be something I can put in them. (And maybe a cleaner to wipe the grease and dust off?! hey I can dream ...) donuts Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 9Sep 09, 2007 11:14 pm the more cupbarods the better im a cupboards freak but they have to go all the way up to the ceiling so that they dont collect the dust. As for dirts and grime, i find mine don't collect that much just wipe them one a week EASY Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 10Sep 17, 2007 11:26 pm I personally find them really annoying - they are either in my face when I'm trying to do something on the benchtop, or if they are high enough not to be then I can't effectively see what's in them!
We are probably not going to have them, or maybe shallow ones. "And why did I have to take a cab?!" Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 11Sep 18, 2007 9:28 am If I had my time over again I'd have both!! We use our overhead cupboards all the time .. but I also love the idea of a butler's pantry.
Our cupboards don't get in my way when I'm cooking as they are high enough above the stove top. I agree with Rel - the thin ones above the rangehood are great for spices, candles, matches etc. All those little things that you don't know where else to put!! A http://www.ourdreamhouse.blogspot.com Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 12Sep 25, 2007 1:20 pm Zoidberg I personally find them really annoying - they are either in my face when I'm trying to do something on the benchtop, or if they are high enough not to be then I can't effectively see what's in them! We are probably not going to have them, or maybe shallow ones. Most average height people dont have any problem axcessing overhead cabinets put in at 600 off the bench. Any lower than this they look stupid and would as you say be very annoying. I agree the top shelf can be a little hard to get to, but it looks far better to have a taller overhead and store less used items up there than having short overheads. Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 13Oct 02, 2007 11:32 pm It is really a matter of personal taste. I like the look of wall cabinets without bulkheads.
Have a look at these kitchen cabinet photos Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 14Oct 04, 2007 2:08 pm I think overhead cupboards are great for things that you don't want kids to grab, and are great for storing glasses. You can make then really nice by having glass doors and putting a downlight at the top. Great for people who have crystal, etc.
As for the cupboard above the rangehood..dont like them at all!! I think that they are dangerous when the stove is in use (yeah ok 'don't use them when it's in use'!!). I have had accidents getting spices, etc from my mums house out of this cupboard while i'm cooking!!! ok so maybe that's just me... ps. i think we would ALL love a butlers pantry! a bit of a luxury for your average jo-blo THEY HAVE FINISHED THE HOUSE AFTER NINE LONG MONTHS... BUT! The carpet is the wrong colour... Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 15Oct 04, 2007 4:42 pm I have added downlights to the underside of my cabinets allowing extra direct light for food preparation also!!
I like them for hiding the spices etc in too! Matt note: I dont cook I have reverted to username - mattwalker Carlisle Homes - Grande 43 My building experience is here: http://www.ourgrandeplan.blogspot.com Re: What are your views on overhead cupboards? 16Oct 09, 2007 6:21 pm Matt,
U hide your spices in your downlights? I love the idea of downlights under the cupboards. Lighting in the kitchen is super important. note: I wish I didnt have to cook, i get forced to on a regular basis!
