Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 28, 2010 2:17 pm Hi all, We're about to undertake a rather large kitchen renovation involving the removal of a formal dining room, 3 walls and 50m2 of tile. This will give us a 6m x 3.5m space for the kitchen, spanning the entire center of the house. We think we've got the kitchen design sorted, but I wanted some unbiased opinions. Asking kitchen designers only gets you biased opinions based on what they want to sell you. Perspective View Sink-side view Stove side view Some explanations/clarifications: - The fridge as shown is not the right size. The fridge (Westinghouse 690L) will fill the fridge void with ~5-8mm either side. - The appliance images aren't exact, but they are pretty close. Stove will be 900mm freestanding, 900mm canopy rangehood, 600mm inbuilt microwave. - The cupboard under the microwave and the one to the right (bottom half of the pantry) will have internal pull-out drawers. - The upper cupboards will be standard shelves. - The cupboard to the left of the sink is a double-bin waste drawer. - Colours will be Polytec Cafe Cream for the cupboard, Caesarstone Ginger for the benchtops. Possibly use Mountain Pepper for two-tone highlights in the cupboard doors, but undecided on this. - A bulkhead will be installed over the stove side cabinetry to fill in above the tall cupboards, with the same line continuing across to high the top of the rangehood flue, and provide a platform for lights on that side. The Sink side will have 3 pendant lights (at this stage) to provide lighting. Our biggest challenges are the two windows, both of which are only 820mm above floor level. We can't move these windows as we are unable to source additional bricks to match our existing. This means the smaller window behind the bench will have an infill panel on the rear of the carcass to cover the exposed rear. Also in front of the sink bench will be a couch that is 3m long. We feel we can make enough room for the bar stools along that edge of the bench if we push the bench & cabinets back into the kitchen space, up against the main window. This gives a ~870mm wide bench, with a 20mm front overhang and 250mm rear overhang, but unbalances the kitchen either side of the window. We're considering the additional Caesarstone cost to move the stove side forward to match. This would still give ~1.6m of floor width between benches. Will that work? Are we missing anything? Is there a better way to handle the space? I'm handling the electricals, flooring and bulkhead work. I'm getting a local plumber to do the gas work, move the sink drain and water pipes, etc. I'm assuming I will be able to handle the rangehood install, but I'll work that out once I get through the rest of the work. I'm now so far into the forest that I can't see the wood for the trees! Re: Kitchen design - input requested 3Feb 28, 2010 4:03 pm Helyn 6m x 3.5 m is a very big kitchen It's a huge space, but due to the layout off the house, there wasn't another way to do it. Here's a couple more images where I've drawn in the walls and extended the floor to show the dimensions of the rest of the space. Perspective: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Overhead: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The couch could be moved forward slightly - it's about 3.3m from the screen, and the screen is a 40". Ideal viewing is supposedly 2.5-5x the screen width, so we're at about 3.2x where it is now. If I shuffle it forward ~300mm, it would be right on 3x. The couch-bench distance is ~900 currently, so would increase to ~1200, but we lose ~250mm to the overhang. Anyone know how much space you need for stools? Re: Kitchen design - input requested 4Feb 28, 2010 4:34 pm I would shorten the island and bring it closer to the other wall, and move it towards the centre, so u can walk around it. It looks too far away and really cramps up the other space. You can always put a nice pot plant in the corner return near the window where u have the bench drawn in now. that will make the island more useable. Also i would change all cupboards to drawers, except the sink and pantry. Re: Kitchen design - input requested 6Feb 28, 2010 5:12 pm Agree with move the island, we are putting in a new kitchen and did a similar thing in reno/rebuild plan - included old small dining into kitchen and adding new dining - our kitchen will be 5.7x2.7 - we made the island central to allow flow and work spaces, will be great to entertain and for easy eating. You will have a great kitchen, our old has all been ripped out and we can see the space and visualise it - the size will be fantastic. Re: Kitchen design - input requested 7Feb 28, 2010 5:48 pm My challenge with turning the sink bench into an island is how to get the sink drain moved and how to get hot/cold water and power across to it. Currently the sink is about halfway between the end of the sink bench and the top wall (as you look at the overhead picture). The plan with the long bench design was to cap that waste and hide it under the new flooring, then take a new waste out through the short return wall. This means no need to cut into the slab, which is something that I've heard can be quite expensive. The hot & cold water and power are all in the ceiling, so they can be dropped down the wall cavity in that short return and run across the underside of the benchtop to the right locations. In an insland I would need to run all of this through the slab. I guess it's achievable, but at what cost? If anyone has had a slab cut to move power/water, I'd love to hear what your costs were. Re: Kitchen design - input requested 8Feb 28, 2010 8:45 pm My husband hired a concrete saw and cut through the slab downstairs for our new bathroom. It took him a few hrs and cost $130 to hire the saw so the new pipes could be laid then we got the plumber in. Is that something you guys could do yourselves? I dont know what a plumber would charge to do the whole job but its worth getting quotes.
