Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 12, 2007 8:03 pm Hi,
Can anyone tell me if it is a good idea to tile over plaster board? My thoughts are to rip out the plaster board and replace it with cement sheet. However I thought it worth asking in case my gut feel is wrong. Thanks for your help I'm on the down hill run now and then start the rest of the house Can't wait to finish Re: Tile splash backs 2Aug 12, 2007 9:22 pm I would go with the cemernt sheeting. I dont think plaster will support the weight of tiles, glue and grout? Prhaps someone can tell us otherwise. There is also the issue of moisture protection as well.
I would go with blueboard. Adrian B Re: Tile splash backs 4Aug 15, 2007 8:06 pm No problems at all to tile over plaster board. Its done in kitchens all the time. Re: Tile splash backs 5Aug 28, 2007 11:16 am We have just removed wall tiles in our 17 yo kitchen to prepare for the rennovation and there was no sign of water damage to the plasterboard. The tiles were still all stuck on firmly, and the walls look as if they could take the next lot of tiles without any trouble. Re: Tile splash backs 6Aug 28, 2007 9:51 pm Yep -Plaster is fine - My place is tiles on top of plasterboard and it's 100% perfect underneath.
I think your concern is based on - if the tile cracks or the grouting leaks - will it cause issues. My answer. If water is ****** around and sitting on the grout - then yes that's a valid concern. But if the tiles in a kitchen have that much water on them or ****** around - then the plasterboard under the tiles are the least of your worries.
