Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 16, 2010 1:49 pm Hi guys I've chosen gloss white cupboards for my kitchen to match a red glass splashback. Since we were rapidly running out of budget I opted for a gloss Amerind laminate. Today I got a call from my cabinet makers and they advised me that since they had provided my quote, Laminex had released a new product called Laminex Silk Finish (basically to compete on the gloss market). Did I want to change? The Amerind gloss boards are thicker and will cost me an extra $1300. (And of course I have already chosen the colours Royal White Gloss & Ivory Gloss). The Laminex product was released early Feb 2010 and comes in six colours: Four solids - Polar White, Parchment, New Antique White, and Pumice. Two patterns - Mushroom Linea and Licorice Linea. http://www.infolink.com.au/c/The-Laminex-Group-236712/Laminex-Silk-Finish-decorative-laminate-board-available-from-The-Laminex-Group-n880698 I am not good at decision making. Has anyone used or seen this new Laminex product yet? Can you share your thoughts? PLEASSSSSSSSSE!!!! If you like the look or the colour then i would go for it, esp if its $1300 cheaper. I think all companies use the moisture resistant MDF so are fairly similar products. I nearly went with the amerind cream flash because i loved the pearly finish but ended up choosing a coffee mushroomy colour as the cream was too yellow. Anyway, i love the easy clean gloss look and as we couldnt afford the two pack, we got the gloss laminate and love it. The edging was 1mm square and it looks great. Re: Laminex Silk Finish - Gloss laminate update 3Feb 17, 2010 10:21 pm Just a quick update on the Laminex Silk Finish product for those that were interested Drove to my cabinet makers today to check out the samples (with Mango's advice fresh in my mind). Its a really nice gloss for the price of normal Laminex (at least with my cabinet maker). I'd probably describe it as a 'soft' gloss (more like a vinyl gloss look) than a 'hard' gloss (like 2pac). Sorry if the explanation is a little vague. Its a GREAT option for those of us building our first home and looking for something contemporary but still in the budget. Definitely check it out with your cabinet maker if you want a gloss look on a budget. The colour range is very limited so far but they have obviously chosen the most popular colours to start the range. I was really impressed and made the switch from Amerind to Laminex Silk Finish (and saved myself $1300 in the process). Talk about last minute decisions since my cabinets are being made this week and installed (hopefully) in a couple weeks time. Will post pics on my blog when the cabinets are installed. We had kitchen selections on Monday at Supreme Kitchens in Adelaide and the silk finish in Polar White was an upgrade cost of $16 per panel. So we're thinking of just doing our kitchen and leaving our bathrooms and linens in the normal finish, because it does add up. Great deal if you get it for standard price. Re: Laminex Silk Finish - Gloss laminate update 5Feb 19, 2010 12:05 pm If this silk finish is anything like the few that are offered by Polyrey, I'd be weary of scratch resistance. We initially chose it but when we took the samples home and tried to scratch it along with the normal laminates, they scratched very easily and left a nice mark. If you can, get a sample and try at home. Hopefully this new range is not as bad. It is a very thin layer over melamine. With the white you can see the melamine through the white layer if you look at it very closely. At a distance it would be fine. This is not a problem with the other colours in the range. It is also a mid-gloss and not a high-gloss finish. The rep I spoke to also said that it is not as durable as diamond gloss, but is much cheaper. Laminex Silk Finish - Vanities are in! 7Mar 11, 2010 3:29 pm My bathroom vanities are & the kitchen will go in on Monday (apparently). Pictures are on my blog and if you click on a picture it should open up to a full screen size so you can get a better look at the gloss finish. My selections were: Bathroom cabinets - Laminex Silk Finish Pumice Kitchen cabinets - Laminex Silk Finish Polar White Stay tuned for the kitchen pics... Couldn't get into the house so all pics have been taken through the dirty windows. I'm hoping to get in sometime when the tradies are there for a better look. All pics are on my blog and if you click on the pic it should open up to a full screen view. I'm really happy with the colour which is Polar White. I also picked up some scrap pieces and took them home to (rather belatedly) test the samples for scratch resistance. Went to town on it with some keys and it left no indents. Its pretty hard stuff. The surface marks were very easily buffed out leaving no trace of any scratches. It seems to fingerprint easily but then its a gloss surface so I wasn't expecting it to be any different from a usual gloss surface. Of course you should always test the stuff out for yourself if you are concerned Is this helping anyone? They are the same cost as normal laminate, but provide that glossy expensive look. In terms of 'hardwearing', anything if you beat it, or scratch it with knife etc will most likely leave a mark. They would be fantastic for rental property renos on a budget. This product is still very new to the market, would love to hear peoples opinions once they have had their kitchen installed. Very helpful We have our colour browse tomorrow and have been backward and forward with finishes, colours, 2 different colours for the kitchen cabinets and the above head cabinets, different finishes... and the list goes on (I'm sure everyone can relate!) Much appreciated sharing your laminex experience with us (Oh and love your kitchen by the way!)
