Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 09, 2007 8:37 pm Spent some time with the kitchen designer today. We really need a 4 or so meter island kitchen bench to tie the kitchen (and open plan area) together.
we were wanting to use ceaserstone - snow. The kitchen designer was very very reluctant to use ceaserstone due to the fact that it only available in 3m lengths. Joints in the ceaserstone can work out really badly (i've seen some shockers). Since this island bench is so important as a focal point of the house he wants us to use something without a joint. He suggested all the acrylic based solid surfaces, corian, Laminex lifestyles, LG Himacs etc. I've never really liked their plastic look. The benefit of the reconstituted stones like ceaserstone is that it has a more earthy feel, and is less translucent than the acrylics. It feel more like a porcelain tile as I look at the sample here next to me. So I'm looking for suggestions on how best to do a 4m or so island benchtop. do I live with the join? do I need to look at natural stone (as the designer also suggested)? If so, where do I start looking - any website links wold be really helpful. is there another reconstituted stone product available in bigger than 3m slabs?? hope someone can help. Re: kitchen benchtop help needed - no joins! 2Aug 09, 2007 8:56 pm I personally would look at Corian, it’s seamless and lasts forever!
http://www.casf.com.au/ There is also Quarella…quartz, reconstituted quartz. Nice product! But I’m not sure what lengths it comes in, you will have to check. http://www.quarella.com.au/ http://www.essastone.com.au/ Essastone is another, also not sure what lengths it comes in. will check out those other stone products too thanks!! Re: kitchen benchtop help needed - no joins! 5Aug 09, 2007 9:07 pm Pasey25... you're not the same Pasey from the CRT-OZ mailing group, are you? Re: kitchen benchtop help needed - no joins! 6Aug 09, 2007 9:09 pm When I do commercial work I always use Hi-Max or Corian….(both the same company) for the vanities in the loos…..it puts up with a lot from all the drunks….so you will have to give it a good hiding in the kitchen to kill it.
My neighbour has Corian in his kitchen, its been there for years, and looks GREAT!! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: kitchen benchtop help needed - no joins! 9Aug 09, 2007 9:11 pm I feel left out!!!!

Oh.. to keep this on topic.. looks like Corian is the way to go. Re: kitchen benchtop help needed - no joins! 13Aug 09, 2007 9:20 pm pasey,
I'm just like you: 1) Don’t like Corian since it looks too flat and plastic 2) Like Ceaserstone (or equivalents) 3) Don't like seams. When I was at the Sydney Home Show I asked kitchen display people if it was possible to join two Ceaserstone pieces so that there was a minimal join. They do it for horizontal pieces to make a 40 mm benchtop. The seam is almost invisible. They said that it can't be done since there is nothing pushing them together. I then mentioned what about a metal bracket with horizontal screw arrangement. They made some phone calls and said it could be done. Bottom line, talk to some people that actually do the Ceaserstone cutting and tell them what you want. It should be possible to get a seamless join. Its the best option so far though. Wonder what the builder will say
I've got my fingers crossed that there is a corian example that I'll like. Re: kitchen benchtop help needed - no joins! 15Aug 09, 2007 9:33 pm I’ve seen the join of a 20mm to make a 40mm slab on the benchtop.
I wouldn’t be happy if it was mine. Best of luck to whatever you choose, hope it looks great for you. Room? Yes. 9pg? No. I sold it. Well it was kinda attached to the house I sold. Re: kitchen benchtop help needed - no joins! 17Aug 10, 2007 8:20 am What about one of those reconstituted stone veneer products?
They did one on BHG earlier this year (actually installed it over an existing laminate benchtop). Can't remember what the company was called, they had a website. I'll try and find the article tonight. They're probably limited by the same manufacturing processes, so I don't know if they could do such a large run, but it's worth checking. Was it Granite Transformations ? There ok, they install 6mm thick stone over the top of your existing benchtops. Good if your after a face lift and on a tight buget. But other than that I woulddnt even consider them. Have seen a few doggy things. Re: kitchen benchtop help needed - no joins! 19Aug 10, 2007 8:38 am sjones,
The product you're thinking of is Granite Transformations: www.granitetransformations.com.au Note sure of their appearance and durability compared to the Ceaserstone, but worth taking a look at. I'd still go for a minimal Ceaserstone join since the prodcut has a good track record.
