Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 11, 2010 2:47 pm This is the 2nd of my 2 issues from a less than brilliant plumber. I told them to connect the D/W tap to cold as that is what the Bosch manual recommended. He said the unit will work better on hot, I told him I don't care what he says. He still did it his way. The tap leaks so I have to get him back to fix that but is it worth forcing him to change it to cold while I'm at it? If it isn't important I'll leave it only because I can't see him doing the work without making a complete mess and getting water everywhere - have raw spotted gum boards under the cabinetry so don't want problems if the idiot floods the area! Re: Bosch Dishwasher, Cold Water "Recommended" - Does it matter? 2Feb 11, 2010 3:15 pm It depends on the dishwasher. Some do work on hot others dont. It should state on your installation instructions whether you its suitable for connection to hot. Connecting it to hot may void your warranty. It might also depend on the temp of the water. If theres a tempering valve installed and it governs the entire house the temp wont go over 50 degrees. Ive installed hundreds of dishwashers and sometimes it states that its ok to connect to hot if the temp is under 60 degrees. If the hot water isnt tempered it will be over this. But its pretty easy to swap it over. you really dont need to be a plumber to do that. Read the install instructions. it will state it there if its suitable for hot connection. If it isnt, simply change it over. Re: Bosch Dishwasher, Cold Water "Recommended" - Does it matter? 3Feb 11, 2010 3:21 pm dave- This is the 2nd of my 2 issues from a less than brilliant plumber. Hi Dave Personally, I'd insist on it being connected to cold (or do it myself) Obviously, the only problem with it being connected to hot is that any cycles (or parts of cycles) that use cold water or water at a lower temperature than your hot water supply, will instead be at the temp that your hot water is supplied at. Do you know what that temp is? If it's high (say 70 degrees) you won't be able to run any cycle at less than this. Me, I'd prefer to retain the option to do so..... Cheers zeke PS I'm starting to be concerned about plumbers since I found one trying to seal a tap surround to a shower wall with a double-sided adhesive gasket. Brute force was getting him nowhere. Then I pointed out that the gasket had peel-off layers on each side and these needed to be removed so it would stick..... Re: Bosch Dishwasher, Cold Water "Recommended" - Does it matter? 4Feb 11, 2010 3:22 pm The hot vs. cold stems from the fact that a DW needs hot water to clean dishes, but all other functions can use cold water (i.e. rinsing). Therefore, whilst a hot water connection is good it will use more energy because the water is heated when it doesn't need to be for part of the cycle. Your energy efficiency is poorer with a hot water connection, but your DW could be said to 'work better' (i.e. it won't need to heat up its own water). This is from the Gov. energy website: http://www.energyrating.gov.au/dwl.html Quote: Water connection mode is important for a dishwasher:
Regardless, appliance manufacturer recommendations should be prioritised if you value your warranty. Plus, the people making the units generally know more about them! Your plumber should not have disobeyed a direct request Re: Bosch Dishwasher, Cold Water "Recommended" - Does it matter? 5Feb 11, 2010 3:31 pm vvs mand It depends on the dishwasher. Some do work on hot others dont. It should state on your installation instructions whether you its suitable for connection to hot. Connecting it to hot may void your warranty. Plumber only installed a single tap under the sink, connected to the hot water. He said there is a tempering valve on the tap, but all the images I google don't match. I think its just a tap (only has 2 positions - on/off) Manual doesn't state warranty void or not to use cold. But does state that it is recommended to use cold a number of times. So I read that to be a strong recommendation. zeke Personally, I'd insist on it being connected to cold (or do it myself) I'm thinking this myself. I'm going to have him leave the current hot connection but fix the valve and add a 2nd tap to the cold line. zeke I'm starting to be concerned about plumbers It is probably the trade that gave me the most grief. Not sure why though! Vundaful! Regardless, appliance manufacturer recommendations should be prioritised if you value your warranty. Plus, the people making the units generally know more about them! Your plumber should not have disobeyed a direct request Couldn't agree more. I have him coming next week, he can correct the issue or not get paid the final balance, his choice. Shame I didn't get a plumber like vvs mand who take a bit more pride in their work! Is says the temp should never go over 60c. I hope this assists. I have a continuous HWS, they're supposed to have a limiting valuve to 50 or 60deg but not sure and given my plumbers other issues/comments I have no idea what it is set to. I don't have any controllers in the house so it is whatever the unit is set to. But the comments about hot water only being used when the unit makes sense to me.
