Browse Forums Kitchen Corner Re: Microwave? 2Feb 07, 2010 8:27 pm I can't see why not, I've survived various times in my life without one. I did use more of other kitchen appliances though, rice cooker, steamer. Think about what you do use the microwave for and determine if you have the time to do without it and if you have another pot/appliance to perform that function. Re: Microwave? 3Feb 07, 2010 8:31 pm We were pretty late getting a microwave, used it a lot mainly for after school snacks, and then the novelty wore off and we hardly use it. I guess it depends a bit on what sort of food you like. We always had a lot of stir fries so the microwave didn't really offer us anything much in the way of time saving or convenience. Re: Microwave? 4Feb 07, 2010 8:58 pm We only use ours once a day, to melt frozen pear cubes for the babies breakfast. When he starts eating toast etc we will likely not use it again! It is possible to live without one, but they sure are handy Re: Microwave? 5Feb 07, 2010 9:07 pm Of course you*can* live without one, but do you want too. Ours packed up recently and we waited for the post chrissy sales before getting another. The 3 weeks without one really showed how much we use it. Mostly re-heating leftovers, but it was missed Re: Microwave? 6Feb 07, 2010 9:14 pm I use ours a lot - but mainly reheating and defrosting. Don't really cook in it, although it does do a nice steamed vegies for the kids in no time. So, yes I would miss mine if it were gone My house and my rants.... - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=26937 We are in!!!...and still unpacking. Thankfully there are always Tim Tams Re: Microwave? 7Feb 07, 2010 9:17 pm Yes I use mine a lot - with shift workers and teenagers coming home at all hours, its good to heat meals if we dont eat together and I use it for defrosting and sometimes I dont knock off work until 6:00 so good for quick things. Obviously you can live without almost any appliance if you want to but microwaves are so cheap and so handy - for me personally, there's nothing to gain by going without one. Re: Microwave? 8Feb 08, 2010 9:15 pm I agree, you certainly can get cheap microwaves these days so no need to go without one. Ours is really only for reheating but definately worth it. (dont ask about the trim kit- hiway robbery) Was it more the space that was the concern for you? Re: Microwave? 10Feb 09, 2010 3:58 pm I actually decided to get rid of mine as no where to put it in the new house and not sure if I like them all that much. I don't miss it at all. I do still use the one at work though, but I think food tastes better reheated in the saucepan, but does take a little longer Re: Microwave? 11Feb 11, 2010 7:46 pm Our Kitchen is getting put in at the moment so all we have is the microwave!!!! We use it all the time, all our veggies are cooked in there, defrosting, reheating, melting marg for cooking,Mars Bar slice, melting chocolate, quick lunch scrambled eggs, couldn't live without it - we will actually have 2 - a new one in the kitchen, and the old one downstairs in the rumpus. Re: Microwave? 12Feb 12, 2010 6:32 am Ours gets a good workout with reheating and defrosting, but we also cook most of our steamed veggies in it, I poach eggs in it and when we're pressed for time, the rice cooker is a huge bonus! I'd be more lost without my wok and non-stick pans, but I'd hate to go without the microwave for too long. We'd be waiting a looooong time for dinner, because we can never remember to take meat out of the freezer. Re: Microwave? 13Feb 15, 2010 3:58 pm Poached and scrambled eggs in the microwave - I've never thought of that. Do you just crack the egg into a normal microwave proof container? We use our microwave a lot for baked potatoes to hurry up the process, just putting them in the oven to crisp the skin. I also cook all but brown rice in the microwave rather than on the stove, and we eat rice a couple of times a week at least. Spanish rice for dinner tonight. How many dried chillies this time? Yum. Pfiff Finally making progress again, with a clothesline (yippee) and some much needed little things being attended to over the holidays. 40 C on New Year's eve? We love our a/c! |
