Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 02, 2010 12:36 pm If there was going to be no cost difference between the two? I really like the burnished wood laminex with a white stone benchtop. We can have 2 pak if we want. It might be easier to make my decision after we speak with the kitchen guys because I dont know much about 2pak and what you can chose and what looks good etc. Re: Would you choose laminex over 2pak? 2Feb 02, 2010 12:43 pm Hi MS Builder, my last house had 2pak, and unless the technology has changed since 2002, then I would not go anywhere near 2pak again It does look fantastic, however (and especially if you have kids) we found that 2Pak chipped frequently after being assured that its rock hard. The main area we had chips was where the pot drawers were and the cutlery drawer. In our new house, we are going with Vinyl Wrap, wanted Polytec (another thread on this elsewhere), however that would have added $6K ouch.. All the best in your decission, again this is just my opnion. * Are we there yet ? I guess that depends on how chipped it gets There is only the two of us so far, no children. Although I would be more concerned about my partner than children What are the pros of vinyl wrap and what does it look like? I was thinking maybe laminate would go better with stone benchtops so we dont have heaps of glossy features like the polished porcelains, 2pak then stone benchtops. But I think I need to do some more research on 2pak because I think you can get a matt finish. Tiling to the ensuite and kitchen cupboard colours are driving me nuts, the rest I think I have sorted. Re: Would you choose laminex over 2pak? 4Feb 02, 2010 3:22 pm Hi, You can get 2 pac in a matt finish its called satin finish. I have built 3 houses and renovated 1. I always had laminate but this time went for gloss 2 pac. I love it, I love the look and have had no trouble regarding chips and my DH is heavy handed and closes the draws with a bang! I think it will be good to have soft closers on them next time. I also find the 2 pack easy to keep clean but it could be the colour I have. I rented a house once and it had a grey/blue colour laminate cupboards and they showed up every finger mark and wip marks it was a night mare. I stuck with the laminate bench top though but would like to go stone next time with waterfall ends if funds allow! We were thinking of going a mid to dark grey - do you think this would look best in satin or gloss? Your kitchen looks lovely, as does your whole house! I just sometimes wish there wasnt so much to choose from Re: Would you choose laminex over 2pak? 6Feb 02, 2010 3:56 pm 2 pak - Look great new. Plenty of colour choices. Not kid friendly Re: Would you choose laminex over 2pak? 7Feb 02, 2010 4:12 pm 2 pac wins hands down for me. I paid an extra $5K to have it in my kitchen and I absolutely love it. I have 2 kids, but they are pretty good and don't smash the doors shut! I had it in my temp accomm while we built, and it did chip ever so slightly where the corner opening cupboard door sometimes hit against the door next to it. I have the same style of corner cupboard door in my kitchen now, but I store things that don't get used often (tall vases etc), so the cupboard is not opened several hundreds of times a day (especially by kids...) I believe it will add to the value if you were considering selling down the track. Real Estate adverts always mention 2 pac kitchens if they have one! I would have loved to have had 2 pac in all the bathrooms too, but couldn't justify the cost. If it was the same price as laminex I would not have thought twice about it! ...but this is just my experience with 2 pac..love it! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! Here is the colour my builder display home has. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ If I build again I will go for 2 pac gloss similar colour to what I have now or maybe even white! if I dare As my builder only charged me and extra $700 for the kitchen (as they allowed satin there, so maybe thats slightly cheaper also) I then paid around $800 to have ensuite, bathroom and laundry upgraded from laminate. As Stormy said they do make a point of it when you come to sell, as we got our house on the market and its one of the first things people notice along with the tiles Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Would you choose laminex over 2pak? 9Feb 02, 2010 4:21 pm Well my I was considering having maybe something else upgraded and having laminex cupboards but the builder just said we could have 2pak or laminex, he has never mentioned anything about getting a rebate so we will probably stick with it. I didnt realise it would be that much of an upgrade. We are going laminex in the bathrooms and laundry. Laundry is going to be lustrous elm I think with white ash benchtop. Bathrooms will be same white stone as in the kitchen with maybe burnished wood laminex, or was thinking lustrous elm for two minor bathrooms and just burnished wood for ensuite... decisions decisions Re: Would you choose laminex over 2pak? 10Feb 02, 2010 4:23 pm Taffy you have polished porcelain tiles dont you? How do you find them? We are going polished porcelain even though people say they are a nightmare to keep clean, they just look too good. We are going polished porcelain even though people say they are a nightmare to keep clean, they just look too good. I just luvvvv the way they feel underfoot and I luvv how they look but I would never have them again I would still go the larger tiles 600x600 but have a matt finish as polished ones are hard to keep clean. I still battle to get a smear free result but I am learning to live with them now and not be so fussy They would still be ok in ensuite or bathrooms but not in such a large living area. DH said we may go back to the original type of smaller tile then he can lay them himself (as he has layed tiles before) as he would never attempt the large rectified ones as they are just too hard to lay Know where your going in life............... you may already be there Re: Would you choose laminex over 2pak? 12Feb 02, 2010 7:53 pm Ms Builder The chipping is an issue I had forgotten about, I was mainly wondering about looks and value. 2pak is obviously more expensive, would it be a better feature for resale? I should have added that the 2 Pak was over a real wood veneer, I suspect this compunded the problem when it came to chipping. I am going for a white Vinyl wrap because of the bad experience I had with 2pak, however, others appear to have had a good experience and to what apears to be a paint base with 2pak cover. From an aesthetic perspective I believe they are on par and costs were the same. Good luck, * Are we there yet ? Ours are peeling and now we have to re do them. Kitchen company said they only have a life of about 5 years. So would never do it again. Our tiled areas arent the largest, so heres hoping its going to be ok! mandystoj Is 2pak the most expensive option????? Or is there another option. Im not too sure which is the most expensive. 2pak was just specified in our initial quote so we dont even know how much it costs to upgrade from laminex to 2pak. We are trying to find the time to see the kitchen guy but we only get saturdays off together so its a bit of a nightmare when they dont work saturdays. Re: Would you choose laminex over 2pak? 17Feb 04, 2010 9:43 am sorry to barge into a topic like this .... but i am confused .. Is 2-pac same as Polyurethane finish ? We are getting the glossy Polyurethane cupboards .. so are they chip-prone too ? Sorry about I have no idea on these things ... Re: Would you choose laminex over 2pak? 18Feb 04, 2010 11:12 am We looked into all the options in great depth and I spoke to a lot of people both here & IRL about the pros and cons. Our kitchen maker is a friend so I trusted his judgement to make the final call. We ended up getting Two pack white gloss and I love it. It is much easier to keep clean then the laminex in a dark colour (matt finish) and the vinyl wrap in light colour (satin finish) that our last two houses have had. We have two small rambuctious kids aged 2 & 4 (the newborn doesn't count yet ) and so far they haven't made a mark - yet swing their legs and kick the underbench cabinets all the time So my choice would always be Two pack over laminex if the funds were available. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Would you choose laminex over 2pak? 19Feb 04, 2010 11:20 am I think the problem with two pak and also vinyl wrap is there are always both good and bad. So it makes it hard to compare different opinions. I do have a white gloss to pac and the one thing is that I am finding with anything gloss is that it is actually easy to clean and wipe things off -sometime i wasnt expecting from what otherpeople have told me. You can wash over existing pavers with 10% solution of water and hydrochloric acid, then wash off. The acid will provide for required bond key with new concrete. 1 36968 Bought in Nov 21 at the height of the market (classic). Good area, atrocious floor plan.
