You don't really want the rangehood venting into the ceiling space, in fact it might not even be legal, though the rules about that seem to change from time to time and from one council to another. Definitely don't vent into the ceiling if you have sarking. Check the instructions. Things to watch for are - whether the rangehood came with a vent kit (like our current one) if not then the correct diameter of pipe (like our old one, if they install a smaller pipe the fan doesn't work as efficiently) whether anything in the rangehood needs to be removed/switched over when you convert from recycling to external operation (we've had externally vented rangehoods in two new houses installed incorrectly because the installers didn't know that the secondary filter isn't required when venting outside so they didn't remove it and also they didn't switch something over to direct the airflow correctly).
