Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 15, 2010 3:12 pm Hi Everyone We have just received our house plans. We are going with 31c ceilings in the living rooms, kitchen and hallways. I have overhead cupboards in the kitchen between my rangehood on the back bench and a central kitchen bench (inclusive of drawers, cupboards, dishwasher recess. I have just noticed that with the high ceilings, there will be a gap between the top of the overhead ceilings and cupboards. Any suggetions re this? Is it possible to close this gap in. I was thinking a bulkhead above my central bench - the same length and width with drop down feature lights would be nice. But I don't really want to cover my whole kitchen area with a bulkhead - it defeates the purpose of high cealings. Is it possible to cover the gap in just above the overhead cupboards and rangehood? If anyone could give me some options/pics of what you have done, I would be greatful. I have seen other builds with 31c ceilings in the kitchen, but to my eyes it didn't look strange. In display homes where the ceilings are often 31c throughout, I have seen the cabinetry extended to the ceiling, e.g. http://redinkhomes.com.au/Portals/Redin ... eStar1.pdf I would urge you not to go too crazy with a bulkhead for the exact reason you specified Re: Bulkhead in Kitchen so no gap above overhead cupboards? 3Jan 15, 2010 4:30 pm Hey jbarry We have a bulkhead in our kitchen, only above the cupboards, as you said you thought you might want. There is a copy of our house plans on the blog and it specifies the height of the bulkhead if you're interested. That was another thing we liked about our builder- kitchen bulkheads above the cupboards are a standard inclusion with Henley's Clendonvale range. I lived in a townhouse that didn't have them and I got really disgusted cleaning on top of the cupboards- it was yuk!!! Re: Bulkhead in Kitchen so no gap above overhead cupboards? 4Jan 15, 2010 5:31 pm if we have enough funds in the budget, I am seriously considering a lowered ceiling in the kitchen area to define this area and emphasis the higher ceiling in the rest of the room, as the plan is it will be a large room including family & dining areas. I really don't want to have space above the cupboards for the pure reason I hate cleaning all the grime that accumulates there. is this something that you could/would consider? I dont know your builder but this is very possible - some builders include it already (ours did ) others have a gap above the cupboards as standard and charge if you want to upgrade to a bulkhead but it is very commonly done in houses with higher ceilings. Re: Bulkhead in Kitchen so no gap above overhead cupboards? 10Jan 17, 2010 11:19 am Bulkheads above overhead cabinets are standard with most builders in the eastern states - they're usually made from MDF and once painted and with cornices in place, you can't tell the difference between them and a Gyprock wall. I know things are done differently in WA, what with the solid brick walls everywhere, but I don't imagine it would be too tricky to do... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This one's a bit different: I have also seen some homes where the ceiling height in the kitchen is dropped to make a bit of a feature. It can look good if the floorplan lends itself to that design. This isn't a very good example, but I can't find a better picture of what I mean just now... Re: Bulkhead in Kitchen so no gap above overhead cupboards? 11Jan 17, 2010 11:45 am Great pics kek I think we will end up getting a dropped bulkhead in a few years down the track when we upgrade the kitchen (we took out all the overhead cupboards to save money, and I've been pining after an essastone or similar benchtop since I've seen them ) and put that dropped bulkhead in the theatre room like I've always wanted. My house designer assured me that adding in dropped bulkheads at a later date is easy as pie Re: Bulkhead in Kitchen so no gap above overhead cupboards? 12Jan 17, 2010 10:08 pm Hi jbarry, My husband and I are having the same dilemma! Our house will also have 31c ceilings and we don't want the gap. Because we don't want a bulkhead over the entire kitchen, we have decided to get one just over where the cupboards are. Good luck! Kris Re: Bulkhead in Kitchen so no gap above overhead cupboards? 14Jan 18, 2010 12:49 pm Hi Everyone Dilemma solved - thanks so much for all your suggestions. I think we will just fill in the gap with what they call a "crown" above the overhead cupboards. Then we will go with a rectangular feature bulkshead the same width and length of the central bench. Gosh - there is so much to think about when you build, although being second time builders, I'm finding it easier to identify the issues prior to finalisation of the plans. This site is just a wealth of information and I'm so appreciative of all the advice that I have been given to date. We are having 31c ceilings and overhead cupboards as well, we will be having a laminated trim with cornice above. Re: Bulkhead in Kitchen so no gap above overhead cupboards? 17Mar 19, 2011 12:39 pm What does 31c equate to? 3m? Re: Bulkhead in Kitchen so no gap above overhead cupboards? 18Mar 19, 2011 12:42 pm PeasInAPod P_D - 31c = 31 bricks high ........ Ohhh....... Still confused............... Is this a WA way of measuring ceiling height, by reference to the number of bricks on the outer wall ? Why not just measure how high the ceiling is from the floor ?? Is 31c a "high" ceiling ?? Still, if we have Stobie Poles, I guess you can measure your ceiling height any way you want !! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ P_D .
