Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 04, 2010 3:20 pm Hi all, we just purchased our place. It's a 6 years old villa however the kitchen cabinet are very dirty and damaged due to renting. We are thinking of getting a new kitchen done basically to replay all the cabinets and appliances (keep them at the existing place though to save money). The old granite bench top still in pretty good condition so in order to reduce the cost, we are thinking of reuse it. Has anyone done this before or have any ideas on whether the cabinet maker company will do this? Any answers will be very helpful to us. Thanks. Re: Can you reuse granite benchtop? 2Jan 04, 2010 3:24 pm Why not... can't think of any reason not to. So long as the cabs are the same to suit it. Re: Can you reuse granite benchtop? 3Jan 04, 2010 3:34 pm Cabinet maker wont, unless they have their own stonemason As onc said, aslong as its the required size I wouldnt see why not? You would need to find a stonemason happy to make adjustments and what not though Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! So overall there're only two things on the bentch, cooktop and the sink. The cooktop is the regular 600m one , the sink might be a bit diff in size.I suppose I just have to talk to the stonemason. We want to change the cabinets under the benchtop into draws, which shouldnt matter with the benchtop I guess? Also will those bigger kitchen company do this? Ones you can get the whole kitchen done including bentchtop, splashback etc. If they can get you a new bentchtop I'd assume they can rip your old kitchen, keep the benchtop and do new cabinets? Re: Can you reuse granite benchtop? 5Jan 04, 2010 3:47 pm Nope, it wont affect the benchtop But placement of the sink might affect where you put the draws. Re: Can you reuse granite benchtop? 9Jan 04, 2010 3:56 pm onc_artisan Why not just reface the cabs What does reface cabs include? Will you still get a whole new kitchen? Or do you have to keep the same setup as if you have cabinets now you can not get drawers. We want some design where we can fit more things in the kitchen as it is pretty small. If you cant find anything under stonemason, you might want to look for "granite benchtops" "stone benchtops" or the like and ring and ask if they'd do it (some may not want the fiddling around thats involved) Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! No change to the shape. I only want to make the existing sink area a bit bigger to fit in the new sink and shorten one end of the granite bentch top to give a bigger space for the fridge. here is some plan i drawed up to give you a better look. http://docs.google.com/fileview?id=0BzchEUXIY5IQMmZmMTRlNWQtN2NkYS00MmI3LWFhZDEtZWQ5M2M3NWZkZWNj&hl=en Re: Can you reuse granite benchtop? 17Jan 05, 2010 12:10 pm Found this place on the net http://www.kitchenmakeovers.net.au/ Maybe they do the type of work you are looking at. Site says they do makeovers. I would check if you are looking at removing the existing stone benchtop, this may be at your risk not the tradesman that is doing the job. I would have liked the squareform type laminex benchtop when renovating our kitchen, but our cabinet maker doesn't usually roll benches to the tight 8mm radius and if he tryed it, he said if it cracked it would be at our expense not his. We couldn't afford the risk so went with what was his standard fit. The time to remove the benchtop, re-cut, re-polish and reinstall may be expensive as far as labour costs go. How would this compare with replacing the benchtop altogether, which I would then assume be gauranteed by the installer. Re: Can you reuse granite benchtop? 18Jan 05, 2010 1:05 pm You are right Karra. That's why I'm looking at who can do this type of work and how much it will cost so I can compare. We can only afford caeser stone if we getting brand new benchtop. But the granite benchtiop we have now seems really good. Ahhhh, hard decision.... Re: Can you reuse granite benchtop? 19Jan 05, 2010 5:18 pm Might be a little biased.... but caesserstone is better than granite in my humble opinion... so perhaps you should consider it a little more Man made, less porous ETA: Unless you have a very expensive granite at the moment, if your looking at equivalent than caesar Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated!
